    1965 Solex P40 I Carburetor restoration question

I have just started restoration on a set of Solex P40 I carbs.
I am interested in comments about what you think about the condition of the carbs and what the photos tell you. I guess the red stuff is something that has been added to prevent leaking.

Never seen the red stuff before. There is a paper type gasket that goes there.

The big potential problem is wear in the carburetor body around the throttle shaft. If air leaks around the shaft your mixture will be lean. This can be fixed by enlarging the holes in the carburetor body and installing bushings (a job for a good machinist who knows carburetors).

Another real issue with Solexes is the accelerator circuit, especially the check valve assembly that is pressed into the throttle body. Corrosion and/or debris will inhibit proper operation and cleaning in-place is typically unsuccessful. See link to previous discussion:

I've serviced 25 sets of these Solexes and can provide tech support as requested. Even when mechanically restored, these carbs are tricky to adjust to make them behave.
