    71 shift rod replacement

    Hello all,

I have been asked to help finish a long term project. 71 T-- the shift rod is to short. Looks like someone had a 915 box but now has the 911/901 box. Is it possible to replace the rod with the drive train installed?

Just looking at it, if I remove the trans mount and lift the trans as high as it will go, it might work????

    Thanks Jake

    My first thought.
The original shift rod is put in thru the front, between the seats.
I’ve never put one in from the rear.

    Current long term ownership: 63 Cab, 71 911, 74 914

A 356 is done that way, don't know about 911, never tried it, but sure doesn't look like there's room to do that.

answer Yes. In addition to the above, remove the rubber boot around the shifter in put shaft. It will need a bit of coaxing and twisting. Now to find a used one and install.

I tried without removing the engine - trans , I finally gave-up and removed the engine - trans . I would say it's not possible without bending something .
