Re: XWX weight

Perhaps because the tubes themselves have weight????

XWX weight

I have not yet weighted a tube, but I cannot imagine it´d be heavier than a quarter of a pound.

tire's

Mr Morton, Tubes are actually quite heavy. At least 1-2 lbs. Quite disgusting.
A while back I was working together with Pirelli to get a small run of CN36's made in the 215/60 size. They agreed to do it as long as I took 20 tires. Within a few day's I found enough interested parties to order 40 tires.
To make a long story short, Pirelli Vintage was a total pain to deal with and they were not interested in the order. I'm still trying......
The 185's are available in small run's, but you have to wait a month of Sundays if you put in an order......Ecspecially in VR form.
So......Perry. I came across my tire's out of pure luck. I have 2 set's of the CN36 215's , NOS, 1 set in the 235/60 and I just came across a nice used set of the original Dunlope's, 215/60 if your interested? That's what your car came with at some point in 72', as per build sheet???

Regards, Robert.......

Robert, thanks for the info.

Just asking......did Michelin ever make XWX at 215/60's?

Best regards.

robert, was i one of the interested parties a while back ago wanting to take a few sets of 215's? i remember someone a while back ago posing this question to me and after making the commitment, never heard from them again....my loss of course.

btw, according to the copy of the my car's build sheet p.118 of the Carrera RS book, my car was shipped with Pirelli's....too bad i don't know italian, i would be on the phone with those pirelli vintage guys right away....

pirellis

Hello

The Pirellis used on Porsche wheren´t italian, they where designed and built in germany ( Pirelli bought the Veith/Engelbert company to have competive tire technology ).

In the early 90´s Pirelli drove down the german branches and since them it is impossible ( or they are not willing ) to built tires on small demands becourse the old machines where shiped to other countrys and the old stuff is retired now. Pirelli Germany still produces the high performance tires and direkt asking reveiled that they only have toolings for 17" inch and bigger tires on stock. They can replicate 15" in there special division but have to handcut the tire pattern. A rough estimate was over 1000$ unit ( If you are a car company thats a fair price to have your trademarks in the tire pattern )

But maybe they still have some CN36 toolings depositet or if the demand is high enough ( and the buyers are willing to pay more then average or Pirelli finds it usefull to make hidden comercial by just being used on every early RS on the streets ) they make new toolings

I´m not sure if Porsche will help on that. The last time they skiped the Problems using Pneumant to make Oldtimer tires.

BTW maybe in the US you can find some NOS BFGoodrich.

Grüsse

Pirelli Germany

Sadly, it seems Pirelli Germany was the only one that made both sizes of the same type.
Whilst NOS tyres are great for display uses, but I wouldn't recommended them for driving. Materials such as rubber do not last forever, as they age they go hard therefore losing grip. As NOS tyres are now thirty years old, I'm pretty sure the grips levels will be very little by now! New vintage tyres should be fresh.

Roland - I think your suggestion is a great idea that Pirelli Germany should be persuaded to make new CN36 tooling, so they could re-produce new CN36 tyres in both sizes. I'd try to talk to them but I can't speak German nor have any ties with them. Aren't you the best man to try persuade them?

tires

Coker has plenty of stock on the XWX's and is expecting another shipment shortly. They're not worried about supply.
But Vintage Tire claims they are NLA. Strange.....
