Thread: 1972 911 Production Numbers

    1972 911 Production Numbers

I posted this question on Pelican, but I think I'll get the most accurate answer here. How many 911's were there for model year 1972? Frere gives the combined numbers for 72-73, and the serial numbers suggest about 12,900.

But is there an authoritative number available?

    Jack,

Morgan lists a total production of 12,962 for 1972. Did you want a breakdown of the models?

No, I just needed the number for the model year. 12,962 seems to be the accepted figure.

    Ask and Get...

    Hi Jack, here ya go:

    YR: Type: Body: # Built:

    1972 T Coupe 1963
    1972 T Targa 1523
    1972 T(US) Coupe 2931
    1972 T(US) Targa 1821
    1972 E Coupe 1124
    1972 E Targa 861
    1972 S Coupe 1750 (!)
    1972 S Targa 989

Interesting, only the "T's" had a different spec for US delivery it looks like... I didn't add 'em up, but it looks close to the numbers tossed around in previous posts..

I'll bring along some photos of the first production day of the '72 model year to Dunkels in case anyone is interested. If you have a '72, your car might be in one of the photos.

    Jack:

Certainly interesting!! I wonder what the production numbers and breakdown are for '73.

Interestingly enough, my VG E Targa was the 73rd made in '73. That and $4.25 will get you a Half Decaf Skim Grande Latte at Starbucks (sorry, guys, that's my wife's coffee.)

Jack? Are you a PCA member? You might think of ordering their publication titled: The Porsche Family Tree"...it's a small pamphlet shaped thing, but it's full of "numbers" info...For example, it tells me that in the 1973 model year, 1973 T coupes had VIN #'s running from 9113100001 thru 9113101252. 1973 T Targas were 9113110001 thru 9113110781
    E coupes 1,366 (numbers made)
    E Targas 1055
    S coupes 1430
    S targas 925

RS's 1036 (we know more were made than this)

    AND...27,660 914's of various engines...
