    Sport Seat Question

I still have no idea what "version" of the sport seats that I have. (which year.) Haven't seen them, and they are now at Autos, being redone.

They have torn them apart, replating the headrest posts and the seat rails (thanks for the suggestion Eric.) Rewelding the frame, etc.

The seats will be redone in German Vinyl and the repro Houndstooth I'm sourcing. Saw a picture of sports that were redone by Autos, and they were basketweave with perffed vinyl on the bolsters.

So, with the houndstooth inserts, and a '73 E Targa, should the vinyl on the bolsters be perffed or just plain jane?

    Inquiring minds need to know.

Those seats look like "Basketweave" rather than "perforated". I have a pair of 68 sports seats which are mainly original in Basketweave

The little red book states that 72/73 options were

    Leatherette (vinyl) standard
    Leather optional
    Seat inlays:
    Perforated leather or vinyl
    Houndstooth
    Corduroy
    Plaid cloth

    Larry,

Those are '71 seats pictured. '73 had non perf-ed side bolsters in vinyl or learher, perf-ed inserts were an option.

    Larry,

I'm not one of the 'seat police' but ...

It looks to me that the basketweave inserts and the perorated bolsters on the seats in the signal yellow car are the 2.2 configuration.

My recollection of the 2.4 sport seat configuration is:

    - Leather or Leatherette

    - Inserts of leather or leatherette (perforated)
    or
Cloth (hounds tooth weave or corduroy)

    - Bolsters in leather or leatherette smooth (not perforated)

Madras cloth is also correct for inserts, see Jeff Smith's (Schmidt's) Silver targa. 3 colors were available in 73, I have the swatches, and NO they are not available to anyone (Larry) !

The houndstooth was available in two colors, tan /black /white, and black /white

There were 3 colors of corduroy, black, tan, and a dark brown.

As to your perforation question....no perforation in 73!, plain jane.

    Everyone:
Thanks for the input, I will go "plain Jane."

Eric: Hmmmmm, OK, I won't do any Madras. I promise.

    What Spills??

    Tom:

You hit the nail on the head. What do you want, a car that just looks pretty, or one that you can drive every day and not worry about?

If I wanted a car I could drive and not worry about, I would have gotten a "T" with an OK body, and dropped a 3.0L in it, and then drove the bejesus out of it.

But I wanted a car that would turn heads, and get some oohs and aahs. My wife has clearly told me that the fabric will get dirty, and inevitably have things spilled on it.

But, just like my silk ties, I can always take the seats to the dry cleaners!!

So, if you have just gotten perf-ed seats, why were you so hot on my not selling so much of the houndstooth? Uhhh, how many PCars do you have? Your sig only shows the one.

How can the SSSP do their duty without it???

Yup, and if I get clear plastic ones to show off the houndsteeth, my car will look just like my grandmother's living room.
