Thanks Curt. Wonderful stuff! It's still really impressive that these beasts were clocked at over 250 on the Mulsanne Straight 30 some odd years ago.
Wicked cool avatar ya got there.

The new avatar is a tad annoying ..... not sure how long I'll have it.
the avatar ain't so bad.
interesting site there. There is another 917 review from Auto Motor Sport on that site. The author says the same thing about 917 versus 908. The 908 is faster on a circuit like the ring than the 917, and that the 917 is a handfull to drive at speed.
On another topic, in light of the legal issues that the 930 presented in the early '80s in the US, the AMS article mentions that the factory was concerned about the 917 being sold to persons that were not experienced enough to control the car.......

Great stuff Curt.
I have it on top authority that the 917 is a wicked handful to drive. Brian Redman told me so as he was climbing into Salzburg livery #22 at Rennsport II. Fired the old beast up and headed off for the high banks of Daytona... as I searched the garage floor for my lower jaw.
I'll never forget the SOUND of the 917s at speed there!!! Absolutely GLORIOUS!

This may be a it of a long shot, but does anyone know Mr. Frere personally?? I ask because I'd love to meet the guy some day, even if just for for coffee... I seem to remember him writing that he lives in Monaco which isn't that far from where I'm now living (France, but suburb of Geneva).
I stumbled across his "911 story" book in 1998 (while doing a summer intern for Delphi in Flint, MI) and read it cover to cover in a matter of days. The technical aspect of his writing and Porsche's development really appealed to the engineer in me and I knew that I would own one some day. A year later I stumbled across my '73E and so it began...
The fact we're both engineers, enjoying Porsche's, and speak French makes me think we could find something to discuss...
Hey, it's a long shot, but nothing's lost, right? The contacts and resources in the Porsche community never cease to amaze me.
Ciao,
Matt
