    Windshield...

It seems that if you don't want to spring for a OE tinted only windshield (over $600 + shipping) the only option today is a PPG or Pinkerton shaded or tint shaded replacement.

The last one I put in was over 6 years ago and was a 'Mexican' Saigla or Surcret (can't remember) ... and it was tinted only, had the etched name, and was cheep...(however 'soft' and pitted easily). It was GREAT - and of course no longer available

I use a 'cheep' replacements because I drive my car allot, track it a little, and NEVER give up behind big cars with big tires....

If anyone has and line on an inexpensive tinted only replacement please let me know.

    Cheers,

I put a PPG in mine when the bodywork and new dash were done. Like you Chuck, I drive my car a lot and did not see the need to ruin an expensive, OEM quality piece in the first 500 miles. I'm pretty happy with the PPG, although the first one had to be replaced because of a distortion.

    Thanks Tom,

Was your PPG replacement just tinted... or shaded (with a blue band at the top)... or shaded/tinted (w/both)???

And... when did you get it ?

Hey Chuck, it is both, shaded and tinted - there is a dark band at the top. It is PPG and the stamp in the corner reads Sunshade Solex Duplate. I got it late Summer of '02. I don't remember the price, but it was a lot cheaper than the Sekurit. Maybe 1/3 the cost.

Thanks Tom, that's what I thought...

The older cars never had a shaded windshield... I think they came out with the SC's...
    However,
I think I'm passed the super originality thing with my car

Will try a couple of more days to find the LAST cheep tint-only windshield around

Will probably end up happy with the same tint/shaded like yours by the end of the week...

    Cheers,

I put in a Pilkington windshield last year from Safelite glass. It has no shaded band and was about $180.00 not incl. install.
Be sure to specify "no-shade band" if you order... two or three times. Even then, you will likely have to send back the shaded one that gets delivered (like I did).

Ugly "Pilkington" logo etched in the lower driver corner, but a PCA sticker hides it nicely.

I think there was a non-shaded version of the PPG available when I got mine. It was offered as an option by the guy doing the body work at the time. I know it is not original, but I like to have the shade. I drive the car to work a couple days a week and it helps with the east-west commute late in the day and early in the morning.

    "windshield row" in East LA

Chuck, in East LA there is windshield row. It is on Mission between the 5 fwy and C.Chavez Blvd. At least 8-10 auto glass shops on each side of the street. PPG used to have their main distribution center there (where I got mine $60.00)

I go back to work on Sunday, I'll be glad to check them out for you. If you can wait until then?

PM me your cell # if I can help.

    windshields

I just bought a new windshield for my 1965 911. It is factory bought from my local Porsche dealer. When I bought it they asked if I wanted the clear or tinted. The windshield I received had the correct OEM markings and fit perfect.

    Problem solved...

Put a PPG tint/shade in today and it's fine...

I figure I'm so hard on'm I could buy 5 of these for the price of one 'right' one from the dealership...

Price from Safelite - $112.14 total + $50.00 for my friend/mechanic Richard to help me put it in...

Price at the dealership for the 'right' Segla tint only (if they had one) ... about $550.00/my price + $100 shipping + install...

    ... some days we win

    Cheers,

PS... It's like cleaning your glasses after frying a steak... WOW!!!
