what year did they fit 195/65-15 and what changes did they do to the geometry?

    Hi

    There is a massive difference between the 185/70Vr15 CN36 that early 911 fitted and a 195/65R15 P6000.

The carcass design is hugely differnt which will give very different handling characteristics. When they moved over they must have ajusted the camber and caster, spring stiffness and dampers to accomadate them.

They did, starting in 1987, fit 195/65VR15s on 6" wheels. There was no corresponding change in ride height or alignment specifications listed in the Technical Specifications booklet.

The Carrera gained 2mm in front anti-roll bar thickness (to 22mm) and gained 3mm (to 21mm) in rear anti-roll bar thickness in 1986. The front torsion bar remained the same at 18.8mm but the rear torsion bar diameter increased from 24.1mm to 25.0mm in 1986 as well. There are two different part numbers for Boge struts (both loaded and insert-only) -'85 and '86-, as well as two different part numbers for Boge rear dampers -'85 and '86-.

I've driven on both those exact tires. While they can look a bit different, they're certainly not "hugely" different, and handling differences are nil in my experience. Heck, I run 205/50/15 for autocross, now that's a hugely different tire and I don't notice much other than sharper turn in and well.. they're sticky!

by 1987 the rim was 16" , as Jim says the factory never used 195/65/vr15's they were an aftermarket substitute for the hard to get 185/60/vr15. I never noticed any handling differences.

Actually, in '87 the 16" were still an option, and the standard tires were 195/65VR15 on front and 215/60VR15 on the rear. Standard 15" wheels were phone dials, and 15" Fuchs were the first step up, 16" Fuchs were the top option (and the most commonly fitted).

Yup, probably a handful of 87 Carreras actually left the factory with Phone Dials. I'll bet not many, if any made it to the US with 15" Phone Dials.

So you were wrong Jim? I'd like to know as well as I'm thinking of the same size.

Would this size work on an SWB narrow body? Thanks!

It should, on 5.5" or 6" wheels. I'm running that size on flat-6 Fuchs on my '72, and they aren't even close to having a problem.
