Thread: 912 vs 911 hubs?

    912 vs 911 hubs?

Does anyone know of any differences if any between the front hubs on a 911 and a 912?

The early parts book shows only one number, but I thought I saw somewhere they were different.

    Thanks,
    Sherwood

    911 front hubs

Sherwood, the part numbers from the 1965-1966 have only one number 901 341 065 02. Without ever seeing a seperate number I would say that all early 900 series cars used a common part.

Starting with the vented rotors from the 1967S the last digit of the part number changes to "03". The hub is deeper to accomodate the thickness of the rotor.

In the photo are three hubs. The first one is for a non-vented rotor. The third is from the "S" venterd rotor.

That middle one is unknown. From the bearing locations it looks to be for a non vented rotor and would give a 16mm wider track. I would venture a guess that it's from a 1976 912. The partial part number stamped on it is 901 _41 605 02. Ya, the third set of numbers are different 065 vs 605? Has anyone got a PET to verify application on these.

    Hope this helps,
    Bob

    According to PET

    901 341 065 02 = 911 < 0305100, 912 < 0354000/0458100
    901 341 065 03 = 911/S (-67) > 0305100, 912 > 0354000/0458100
    901 341 065 04 = 911/12 1968 - 1973

    I can't find 605 02

    Nick and Bob,
Thanks for the info and pic. I had read in another thread (another forum) that the 912 front hubs were thinner, allowing more wheel width and wheel well clearance when used on a 911. It appears that isn't the case.

Anyone ever try removing a few millimeters from the front mounting face?

They are thinner. I posted this a long time ago on the Pelican site. They are about 1/2" thinner. I used these w/72mm studs on my '73 targa street/track car. I used a 1/8"-1/4" spacer to clear the 930 caliper. I also took the shock covers off so the tire wouldn't rub. This set up allowed me to use 8" 944 fuchs w/245 Hoosiers on the front clearing a stock fender with the lip rolled and 1.8 camber.

    Cosley,
Thanks for the correction. Any particular 912 this applies to or all? Just want to make sure before I commit.

Cosley, which of the hubs pictured above did you find to fit? Would you measure the distance from the rotor to the wheel face on the hub to verify dimension? Appreciate it.

    Thanks
    Bob

The hub on the right, 32mm. I don't see any part nu. on the hub.

    Cosley,
The hub on the right labeled 32mm hub was identified by Bob as a hub for vented rotors (and S calipers). Today, I verified that a '68 912 uses the 47mm hubs on the far left (with unvented rotor).

If the 47mm hubs are "thicker" than the others in the pic (the distance betw. the end of the bearing hub to the wheel mounting flange), it's hard to tell in the pic, then 912 owners with unvented front rotors can substitute "vented" hubs in place of their solid rotor hubs and decrease the track for added wheel width/tire clearance.

However, it appears the upgrade only works in that direction. A 911 with "vented rotor" hubs doesn't gain any advantage using a 912, solid rotor hub other than perhaps increasing the front track.

    Good info anyways,
    Sherwood

12/14/04, See correct info. below per Bob's clarification.

    Sherwood,
the 32 mm, with part number ending with .02, dirty hub, on the right is from the 911/912 with UN-vented rotors.

(When I refered to the first it was by part number and closest to the camera, I can see now, looking at the picture the hub on the left could mistaken as "from the left=first". The left hub is from the 1967S vented rotor. Sorry for the confusion)

Cosley, thanks for the info. This is good to know.
