Wow! I was born just a few miles from Mike Hawthorn's family garage at Farnham in Surrey and remember well the day he was killed while at the wheel of his Mk2 Jaguar, even though I was only very young. He was reputed to have been engaging in a little street racing along a stretch of road known locally as the Hog's Back when he lost control of the car on a bend. Coincidentally, his dad was killed about ten miles away returning from Goodwood.
Mike was every bit the local hero and the family garage has, today, been renamed "Hawthorn's" in honour of the racing connection (originally known as the "Tourst Trophy" garage, it was later renamed "Baron's" and became a BMW dealership. Today "Hawthorns" specialises in TVRs and other hi-po machinery).
Mike's local nickname was "The Farnham Flyer". There is a road named after him in the town, but that's about all. The sad thing is that his grave is virtually lost in the local churchyard and his headstone carries the inscription "A gay young man" – today, kids laugh at this, forgetting that, once upon a time, being 'gay' simply meant you were happy and enjoyed life.
To own his Ferrari would, for me, be like owning the Holy Grail.

Very Nice, and yes I do covet, admire and would like to own a early Ferrari, Fritz
My covet, or desire if you will is the 300 SL gullwing coupe. My uncle used to pic me up and take me with him and his buddies to Watkins Glen to race said car. I have the reel to reel movies of it still and plan on figuring out how to move them to a dvd. He would take me up our local Canadian highway late at nite for some rather spirited driving. God those were the days...they firmly implanted sportscars into my persona when all others around me were street corner drag racers with American firepower.
