What is the paint scheme for trunks in '73 911s

    Hi,

I am having my car restored by someone who is more of a 356 expert than 911 expert so he is unfamiliar with some 911 details. Can someone post some pictures of the front part of the trunk of a '72 or '73 911 when Porsche painted them body color? In my car, pre-restoration, the inside front panel was black and the rest of the trunk was body color, or close to it. Porsche didn't really spray the trunk all that well so the color was really thin to non-existent in some parts.

Are the battery boxes painted body color or black? If it is black, is it actually painted or just black undercoating?

    Thanks for the help.

    Neil,

Paul D. will tell ya about '72's... but for '73's.. You're right, the trunk was sprayed lightly and kind'a haphazard. The battery boxes were barely undercoated and sprayed body color in the same way. The paint seems to get lighter (more sparse) the further up towards the dash cover. The way I did mine was to re-shutz and epoxy worn spots, then airbrush the color lightly until about the beginning of the tank... then I left it the way it was on up to the dash cover. I then came back with a scotch brite pad and wore down some of the new color and then clear coated.

I'll post a couple of pics when I get home.

    Hope this helps,

As Chuck said, your right about the thin paint in the trunk. My car has been painted at least 2 times, but it seems like the trunk area was never retouched. I've put some POR on the front pan, but I remember it being silver before that, like the rest of the trunk. The tank and filler neck are tan. My smugglers box lid is dark gray with some silver overspray. I've never know if that was originally like that or not, anyone else's look like that?

My 1973.5 is black with bits of the original signal yellow peeking out here and there. I don't know if the trunk repainted when the car was redone in Red but here's a section of what it looks like now:

    Harry,

That happened allot... To do a proper re-color on a '73 or newer it's color in the trunk, engine compartment, and wheel wells.

Lots of shops did a 're-color' then painted all the above black like the factory did in '72 and before.

When I did my car in '90 we did a 'same color' repaint without doing the trunk, engine compartment, and wheel wells... During my engine rebuild I painted my engine bay and trunk... I'll get to the wheel wells some day

    Yep,

They also must of tried to hide the wheel well color as well but most of it peeled off when I water blasted it to clean up many years of crud. You can see the before and after here:

I have a Tangerine 72. The front of the trunk compartment has been painted after some repair work but the back half has the original, thin and faded looking paint

Here are some shots of my trunk before the re-paint back to original silver. We left the trunk as-is, but cleaned things up a little.
