Thread: Chassis Number Locations

So is the production number is on top or beneath the dash? Also, I have never heard that there is a production number on the bottom side of the radio?? Is this correct ? I know for sure that there is a production number behind the knee pad, by the ashtray.

So, on a typical later "early 911" (70'-73') are there 3 places to find production numbers?

The # under the radio is the build #. It let the production team know what options were ordered with that particular car.

... and it doesn't match or correspond to the VIN (but I think it is the same as the VIN for early SWB cars). References to the number by the radio and behind the kneepad are for the same number. There is only one stamped on the dash. Someone probably realized it's a lot easier for everyone along the line to see it scribbled on top with wax pencil. Today it's all done with barcodes (how boring).

I wonder if anyone has ever cataloged the painter's signatures? I can't quite make out if mine are someone's initials or just some sort of a sign?

To repeat a post made on another thread, on one board or another. Anybody who thinks there aren't counterfeit "S" cars out there is kidding himself. This is NOT a speculative statement.

    Matching Numbers on Karmann-built Vehicles

Had an interesting conversation w/ the owner of a '70 911. Turns out that this Owner has a Porsche that came w/ 'numbers' stamped on its body panels --- specifically both doors and the engine lid . . . and that these matched the last 2 digits of the vehicle’s ‘secret’ number

    Vehicle is a Karmann-built E coupe

    Porsche’s number-stamping practices are always interesting ---- VINs, engine + trans, date codes --- all of it. And the difference/impact a few little squiggles here-n-there can have/make on values/perceptions? . . . . . boggling

Anyway, I’ve had a poll going for a while now about the appearance/absence of any numbers/anything stamped on the vertical latch support of the engine lid. I got started on this when I discovered that an alu lid that I’d purchased/fit to my vehicle had two digits stamped on its support. No detailed responses + comments on that poll. But --- w/ the pics + descriptions I’m posting here? . . . . I’m gonna pull some things together, then make a Flying Hypothesis . . .

I believe that Karmann stamped some of the major panels of car bodies that they built w/ the last two digits of the vehicle’s build or production number . . . aka the ‘secret number

The complete production number appears in two places, both accessible from inside the passenger compartment . . .

. . . The 1st is under the dash, below the radio opening, under/behind the knee-pad

. . . The 2nd is along the edge of the access port for the shift-rod coupler at the rear of the trans tunnel . . . aka shift-rod coupler plate

Now all this is Old Stuff . . . some other threads . . .

    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...cret+number%27

    http://www.912bbs.org/vb/showthread....-number-coding

    (Especially interesting is post #38)

But --- and here it comes . . . I believe that Karmann also stamped at least the doors and engine lid --- whether these were steel or aluminum . . . w/ the last two digits of the production number . . . at least as late as MY70

On doors, these numbers will be found at the top-edge of the inner door stamping, under the door caps

On lids --- steel or aluminum . . . these’ll show-up on the inside of the vertical latch support

I’ve started a new poll for owner’s of Karmann-built vehicles, to see what kinds of stamped numbers other owners can find . . .

Mean time . . . looks like Owners of Karmann-built vehicles might have a another set of numbers to ‘match

Rick, I have a 3/71 build 71T that I will check. So to check the door, you pull just the top cap off that is just above the door card? How about the trunk lid or fenders?

I'm going to beat Scott to it... My 71 Karmann T has 80 stamped on the decklid center strut and passenger door flange as shown in your pictures. I haven't pulled the dash pad to verify but I'm sure it will match the production number. It is the 10th to last Karmann car built (#1924) April 1971.

Update: got the dash pad loose enough to see the number 121 XX80 stamped in a very neat straight line with numbers filled in with white paint.

Ok, in the name of scientific discovery I got the carpet loose in the tunnel opening. Number there matches the dash number.

That's great Mike! Did you check the tunnel opening also? How about the trunk lid? I am curious where that one is located.

E too? I think I can check on of those to. Mine is the 54th E built for the 69MY.
