period correct tires for 1970

I really love the Michelin XWX tires I put on the car last year. It seems they needed 500 miles to get ready, but they are great. Very grippy, good feedback, no noise and are wearing perfectly. I have the Vredestein tire on my 356 and like it a lot. For the 911, I think the Michelin is a nicer tire and offers a original look. The problem is the price. They do cost good money.

I still have the NOS spare tire that came originally on my 1971 911T. Like many of the T's of that era, it came with 14 x 5.5 in alloy wheels. The tires were Michelin XAS's - 185 HR 14. It used the standard tire profile of the times which was I think 78, so there was no profile designator in the tire size. It also had an asymmetric tread design.

I believe this was a common tire for the early 70’s 911T’s and 911E’s with the 14 x 5.5 inch alloys.

I too have the OE spare for the 14 X 5.5's that came on my '69E and it is indeed a Michelin XAS
