    I'm just trying to say that it's not as easy as it sounds. Around these parts, when a puke tries to cheat someone, he gets his arse kicked...and then we give him to our friend Gio the stonemason troll for half an hour, never to be the same again.

    Then we call the authorities. "Honest Lieutenant, he was that way when we found him." Heh, heh.

    I agree that there is a strong incentive to counterfeit an S and even more a RS. Where there is a will there will be a way. I think some of the "restorations" out there with little, in the way of original parts, are in a grey area too. I mean you can have a restored "numbers matching" example of a car with a new front clip, new roof clip, floor boards rockers, fenders, ect. At what point does it cross the line ? If you take the numbers off a mangled heap and put them on another chassis, is that a "restoration" or a counterfeit ? I think this is why a truly "original" unmolested example is so nice and should be valued accordingly. If you buy a restored car, even just new paint, better see a full pictoral documentation of just what was done and by whom, start to finish. IMHO.

    Precisely the arguement given to me by the counterfeiter...it's not counterfeit, it's a chassis replacement, since he did buy the car that donated the VIN numbers...

    My thoughts exactly. That's why some of the astute collectors on this board say "it's only original once". Not to say a good well documented restoration is not valuable, but all other things being equal, I'll take original please and opt for preservation.

    Where do you draw the line in a "restoration"?

    I am sure that the "RS" that Tom has alluded to is not the only one out there - far from it
    A number of us in Australia are aware of a 73 RSR that literally "crashed and burned" in a very public way in the 70's - and for all intents and purposes was totally destroyed

    However a few years ago I saw reference to this very same chassis participating in historic racing events somewhere else in the world I have never seen it advertised for sale so I have never had to decide to provide what is reasonably public information here and probably would impact a value for such a rare machine

    I have no knowledge of whether there were any scrap parts salvaged from the wreck and fire but I was very surprised to see that in the 1990's a car with the same chassis and engine number was in existence. It might have been a fantastic restoration, but then again with the values these were fetching in the 1980's.............

    Again, like Tom, I had better say no more, but forums like these and the people who contribute to them add a massive amount to the information available to the enthusiasts who value the cars and their history - let alone to potential purchasers.
    It is a pity the same methods of sharing information were not around in the 1980's when many questionable "restorations" were done.

    You must have been refering to this car . I believe this was a 73 RSR 2.8 chassis converted to 74 RSR 3.0 bodywork prior to the mishap. I will let astute people figure out which chassis on their own. But it really can be only one of two. And only one has this info. associated with it.
