    Aussie high country drive

    Hi all,

Hugh Hodges (VP - Aust. TYP901 register) and I just had a fabulous 5 days driving from Melbourne up to Sydney via the "scenic" route which included over the Snowy Mountains Hwy - 200 kms. of very fast winding open road and plenty of hills and tricky bits, perfectly suited to an early 911.

We were on our way to Canberra (nations capital) to meet with the Canberra porsche club guys to fill them in on the early TYP901 register and then on up to Sydney for a Sunday brunch run with some of our Sydney TYP901 members.

We drove home via the coast run for a while before turning inland for the mountains again and some really incredible pieces of road. Some pics are posted below.

Hugh and I thought that you guys would really appreciate seeing some of the Australian high country if you ever get down this way. We surely would love to host some early 911 guys down here for a few days of driving over some of our beautiful, yet rarely travelled roads. We might even be able to manage a few LHD cars - but you still have to drive on the "other" side of the road.

be sure to let any of us know if you are planning a trip downunder. Lisa and I will be at GAF this year so be sure to catch up with us if you want some more info.

I am soooo jealous! Lucky boys you are - but you certainly flew the TYP901 flag high so I should be pleased (but I'm still really jealous). We spent the weekend nursing new born lambs and the cutest tiny 'kids' (goat type) - family time so I must not complain...still, look at that road ...

    Chuck,

you would have loved it. the roads had plenty of everything to offer. We left a small country town this morning called Bega then drove for over 2 1/2 hrs along very fast sweeping ridge line roads, then over 2 mountain ranges (god bless the engineer who designed this road 'cause he got the camber and sweep of the curves just perfect); then a 120mph+ blast into another small forestry town before heading south along the road pictured above under a perfect blue sky.

And this is the middle of our winter over here too ! Boy were we lucky with 5 great sunny days but still nice cold air for that MFI engine !

I'll tell Lisa to bring along an extra large suitcase so you can stow away back with us on the return trip from GAF ! We'll get you downunder for some 911 fun one way or another !

    Phil,

I am planning on bringing an extra large (empty) suitcase...but I don't know whether Chuck will fit with all the other stuff! I say we just kidnap him and bring him back with us for the Nats at the beginning of October - whatcha think? Oooh - and he could have a nice couple of weeks' holiday here beforehand too .

    Rick,

More about the drive and that fabulous country? You'll have to ask Phil and Hugh if they have some more pics to make us all drool...(remember I was doing the family thing whilst these guys were having the time of their lives).

Or was that more about Millers beer tasting like cat's pee?

Lucky the guys went when they did...this last week we have had a really big snow dump and I doubt they would have got through those roads...hell we even had snow on the beaches down here a couple of days ago...unbelievable photos in all the press - once in a lifetime stuff. In case you're wondering, it has been bloody freezing down here - roll on Ventura for some sunshine and short sleeves!

Oh man, that takes me back,

Did a similar dirve, but towards Melborne a couple of years back....absolutely brilliant and those raods are just fine...

Shame we were driving a Corolla and not a 911....one day we'll manage.

    More pics please....pretty please...
