Curt,
That's a GREAT shot of Milt at Daytona… I've never seen it… Thanks bud
For those who don't know... a little background on Curt's cool picture:
In early '68 Milt took over the Vasek '67S Davey Jordan debuted the year before. For the rest of '68 and through '69 Milt drove one of 2 '68S's for Richie Ginther's Competition Motors (a off-shoot of John von Neumann's dealership) partnering with Alan Johnson... Through the '69 season the teammates found themselves pitted in a close points battle that would be decided at the Nationals in Daytona. Although Milt was the faster driver Alan Johnson seemed to always be better 'financially connected' throughout his career then his other 'amateur' competitors......... So, long story short, Ginther told Milt to 'lay down' for Alan at Daytona........ our old Milt wouldn't do it...
This is how it's written up in Hal Thoms book:
Here's a picture I've posted before of a previous race where Richie is probably 'discussing' Milt and Alan's relative lap times...After two full seasons with Ginther and the team orders, it came down to the
1969 SCCA American Road Race of Champions at Daytona, and Milt had had
enough. “I told Richie that the race was going to be mine, even though I knew it
might cost me my ride.” He was told that if he won, he’d be fired. He drove to a
convincing win. After the winner’s ceremony in winners circle, he was indeed
fired
Cheers, and thanks again Curt,
Chuck Miller
