    Need Help Decoding Engine #

Can anyone help decode a supposed 2.4E engine #? It is #6231264. My references indicate the 6= 6 cylinder, the 2= E spec, the 3= 1973, and the 1264 is the serial #. Correct?

My reference also indicates 584 '73 E coupes and 431 '73 E targas, or combined 1,015 '73 E's needing engines? If so, why would there be a 1264?

The number of Coupes (584) & Targas (431) that you quote was up until the end of Dec 1972.

In total for the '73 model year there were 1366 Coupes & 1055 Targas.
