Oil Line Dimensions w OEM Front Oil Cooler

    Guys,
How long is the black flexible hose section in the oil line that goes from the engine case to the thermostat in a 73 S with OEM front trombone oil cooler?

I am adding an OEM front trombone cooler to the 2.7 MFI that I am putting in my T Coupe. Unfortunately I am missing the engine case to Thermostat oil line with the 90 degree bend (illustration # 69, page 1/6/2 in the 72/73 parts book). My local dealer says the list price for this line is $533.00. Ouch

So my plan is to take the line from a car without the front cooler and have my local hydralic shop replace the black flexible hose and add the 90 degree bend hard line fitting that I have.

So the question is: How long is the black, flexible hose section?

I'd dry fit it and measure but right now I am in the soaking and cleaning stage of the project, trying to get the hard lines apart from the thermostat and trombone section. That Greek guy that talked about moving the world with a long enough lever, a fulcum and a place to stand never tried to take a 30 year old oil line apart.

    Thanks

That price is stupidly silly. You can make up a FAR better line with Aeroquip AN10 hose and the appropriate fittings / adapters for far less.

I recently purchased this line from Stoddard. The problem is that the line is year specific and at the end that connects to the t-stat has a 90 degree bend in it so that it can bolt (30mm) to the bottom of the stat. If you go with a 74 and newer hard lines then the stat is in the wheel well and it takes a totally different line. PM me with your email address and I can send pics and measurements of the line you seek.

I just reread your post and saw that you had the 90 so the measurement is 7 and 3/4 inches. That includes the portion in the fittings. Any place that makes hydraulic lines should be able to make up a line and re-crimp your fittings. A heck of alot cheaper. The hard line portion is exactly the same for one with no cooler.

    Rick,
Thanks for the help. It's going on the 73 as soon as I get a cheater bar long enough to help me remove all the connections. In order to get the comple oil tank, hard lines and trombone into the car it was necessary to hack saw the 'almost ruined anyway' fabric lines.

Hey John, are you using the 73 t-stat? If so you may want to cut the nut that connects the stat to the tank. There are 34 of them in Germany and I have the part #. It is not worth tearing up the unobtanium stat. Are you using original hard lines as well?

    Rick,
Thanks for the thought. Are you talking about the aluminum looking 36 mm nut that screws on to the oil tank where the non front oil cooler line from the case usually attaches? If so, you're right, it looks to be a nosebleed. I'd be grateful if you send me the number. Do I order it at my friendly P/A dealer?
New question: If you are in Orlando, do you know my friend Mark Peebles up in Longwood? He and I had soft window 912's back in the late 70's.

    Thanks again for the reply.

John, I was refering to the nut that attaches the t-stat to the tank, unique to the 73. Instead of risking ruining the stat I cut the nut that joins the stat and tank. Then ordered a new one from Brumos Porsche in Jax FL. The part # is 911 107 157 00. Took a couple of days and 30 bucks or so, it is unique as well by having right and left threads to tighten the stat to the tank. Whatever you do, don't loose the flare fitting that goes in between. Flared like an AN fitting and a long body. Bad leak without that one.
