Fake leather stearing wheels in -73 E's

Hi, I have now two -73 E's with S-options. For one of the them I have gotten the factory spec and it say S-options and states S-leather stearing wheel. The thing is that both cars has stearing wheels that look like leather but on closer examination they are of some kind of foam. If they were in good shape one could live with them but now the foam has started to loosen from the rim. Not so fun when you drive inspired....

Is this only for 1973, or?

Unfortunately, foam wheels became standard issue on most 1973, North American cars in an attempt by Porsche to cut costs. You can allway's locate a real leather wheel and hang the foam one on the wall.

And in Japan. My car was ordered in the US and picked up in Japan. Used there for 2 years and then came to CA. I brought it to Sweden this summer. I find it a little interesting to see the M-option M565 indicating real leather.

One other interesting thing is the tiny 13 mm fron swaybar. My car did not have any M-option for that. It seems that this was a "base" spec for the that din NOT have the S-sway bar kit.

    Wheels

My early 73E had a leather wheel but my mid production one has foam. In addition my 73S mid production had the foam wheel as well. They do hold up nice.

Interesting. I have 9113200108 and 9113200927. A early and a late car, both have foam wheel, and in sorry state. All S's I have seen has had real leather. I guess when wheels where new one could be tricked, maybee there was mistakes made at the factory.

So Jeff, this is what you discovered during your dissection of an RS/14-6 wheel? Since the 14-6 is an early car, maybe it's wheel is leather, while the RS is foam? Just guessing here...

Your question has nothing to do with what we are talking about, I dont understand!

No mistake on the wheel, look at the date stamp on it. The foam wheels obviously where in use at some point in 73, like I said my #78E had leather and the wheel seemed to match the car according to the date stamp, and the foam one is on the other E as it was on my 73S and those are also correct to the cars with proper date stamps. Both of those mid cars had wheels dated 1 and 2 of 73. Hope this helps. I wouldnt worry about it, how really cares, they just got ride of the leather and went foam in 73 at some point on appearance group cars not just S cars.

I thought it was a little funny to see that the spec differed from "reality". The foam do not age well so I'll have to get one in leather. One other odd thing that have learned about the E's that i did not know is that the seem have had 13 mm sway bar in the front as standard item. I have not seen any comment on that in my Porsche publications.
