Thread: Widened Deep 6 on Rear of SWB and/or pre 74

Thumbs up Widened Deep 6 on Rear of SWB and/or pre 74

This question may have been asked before but I could not find a definitive answer.

I am considering widening some deep 6 wheels to 7" like the 911R to use in the rear of a stock SWB wheel opening. I do not want to roll the fender or modify the body in anyway. I currently run std deep 6s on this car. I know 7" will work, but how about going to 8". Will I be able to run 215/60/15 tires in the back and who makes a tire in this size in the USA?

I would like to run 2 of the same 7' or 8" deep 6s on the back of my 71 911s. Has anyone gone this route before? Would love to see some pictures from the rear of the car.

I know some may cringe at the though of slaughtering 4 early heart shape deep 6s, but rest assured the workmanship is top notch and these will be beauties. Al Reed will refinish the wheels after I have them widened. I just need to determine the max. width for the respective cars.

    Thanks in advance!

Pirelli P6000 Summer tire comes in a 215/60/15. I use them on my crewcab. Rim width recommendation is 6"-7.5". They're on the tirerack site. I think Harvey W. widens them to 7.5 or 7.75". I don't think an 8" will fit.

I run 15x7 (the RS type), and have used 215/60/15 in the back of my 68S with no problem.

    Widening wheels

    Cosley,
8s will not fit under SWB fenders, 7s will just barely fit. Depending on tire mfg and alignment you can use 6-12mm spacers.they are so close 225/50s require alingment bolt clearance and fender mods. LWB cars have more room so we use 15mm spacers with 215/60s and seldom have interference.A 7.5 or larger may fit if you decamber and stiffen your suspenson. There would be no advantage because you won't be able to fit any larger tire than a 225/50 and that works well with a 7. 911Rs had a much larger rear fender that a normal SWB. Most photos don't show that very well but if you see them in person you can see that they are bigger than even LWB cars. The ones I have worked with have 21mm spacers on the rear with 7R wheels (that steup hits a LWB fender by about 5or6mm). Hope this answers your question.

That is great info. I currently have deep 6 x 15 on the rear of my SWB with 6mm spacers and I have no clearance issue with my fender lip. I assume that the issues with 7" that are mentioned in the above responses have a similar positive offset to deep 6". If I can squeeze a 225/50 on a 7" it would look really sweet. I will jack up the car and take some measurements.

I'm running widened shallow "7Rs" and 215/60 in the rear (LWB). A 6mm spacer was needed to add enough clearance between the tire inner sidewall and a bolt on the spring plate.
A 15mm spacer will require longer studs - a 15mm adapter does not move the wheel back-flange surface out far enough to clear the factory studs (wheel will bolt to the stud ends). You'll need a 21mm adapter. As far as an 8R I don't see any chance of adding 2" to the inside offset without big spacers and doing some fender mods on a SWB (is that what you meant?).

Weidman-ized 7R's on LWB with Standard Flares

I'm putting a set of Weidman-ized deep 7R's with Pirelli P6000 215/60's on my LWB '71 coupe. We started with the 15mm spacer, but don't have sufficient clearance on the front oil cooler lines (the '74 and later versions) - it's about 5-6mm. I'm running 25mm torsion bars in the rear, with ride height set at 24 inches from floor to bottom of fender lip.

I've seen lots of discussion about having to shave the spring plate bolts, but not really about the oil lines.

We're trying to figure out how much more spacer to use to optimize the combination risk of hitting the oil lines on the inside and the fender on the outside. Has anyone dealt with this?
