    Engine Sound Pad

I'm replacing my engine sound pad. I'd like to leave it off completely, but cleaning up the adhesive isn't practical. It looks like my options are the original type pad, a superceded newer 'lightweight' type pad or a foil backed Dynamat material. I'm looking for photos of what you guys are running to see what I like. Thanks.

Me, too...also interested in how to attach the replacement (mine has disintegrated!) and how to best clean the old glue...

I went with the new 'lightweight' replacement...

It goes up easy, looks good, works the same, and the damn thing is about 4lbs. lighter then the stock one.......right where you don't need 4 extra lbs....

The weight of the orignals is why they delaminated, came down, and disintegrated...

What to use to remove the residue/old glue? A wire brush? Some type of solvent?

    Peter,

Wire brush and acetone ... then scotch brite pads ... be careful not to let the acetone get on anything but what you want... It won't get it all off, but then your go'na cover it anyway....

    Cheers,

Just brush it w/no chemicals if you're gonna put a new pad in. No reason to go insane on this - the old adhesive is fine to stick to if it sticks up there itself.

Use the 3M adhesive - I sprayed the surface and used a tube for the peripheral areas and a big X across the area.

Yeah, mine came off very easily with a wire brush. The leftover adhesive really doesn't matter.

I put in a light weight pad while my motor was out this year too. Looks just like Chucks. But I wanted to add that Permatex makes a really good spray adhesive that I used instead of the 3M stuff. It does not set as quickly and lets you pull the pad loose and re-adjust for a minute or so, but then sets up nice and strong. No sags yet on my pad.

Tom - what is the Permatex stuff, a trim adhesive? I've got the 3M trim & weatherstripping adhesive but I don't think there's any 'adjustment' once contact is made. Did you guys source these lightweight pads from Pelican?

Curt, it's called Permatex Heavy Duty Headliner & Carpet Adhesive. Item #27828. It's a big orange 16.75 oz. spray can. I learned about it from Paul Thomas, I think Hal plans to use it when he installs his new carpets too.
