Thread: Show Your Tires?

  1. #21
I am biased toward 15s; you will find that the majority of folks on this forum prefer 15s for a correct period look. I used to prefer 16s due to tire choice, but now look at them like I do a moped: a fun ride when no one is looking (track), but I wouldn't be caught dead on one (street). The 16s are for '80s 911s and your car looks waaay too sweet for those big wheels. If you are tracking it, of course, anything goes.

Pretty much what I figured. I did find Dunlop sells the same tire
Iam running in a 225/60/15. Medium grade tire, but it will do for now,
then when these tires are worn, I'll switch to a higher perf. tire in
    a 55 / 50 series.
Sounds like we have a few board members with 7R replica orders at Weidmans

My experience has been that a 225 on a regular 7x15 Fuchs in the rear will rub on most narrow bodied 911s, even with 2 degrees of negative camber. On some it will not rub, but they will be in the minority. Be very careful when fitting this combo to your car - paint burns are just too much of a hassle to fix afterwards.

I'll add: you can do a trial fit and have people sit on the car...

also monitor the inside of the wheel well - you might be able to catch an incipient burn while it is still gouging thru the undercoating.

all the cars are different so there is no fixed rule you can use, except to stick to something more narrow and be safe

I am also having some 7Rs done by Harvey and will run the 225/50-15 in the rear. What tire is a good compromise that I can use for street and freeway driving (will be driving cross country this spring) and do a track day and couple of AutoXs with?
I would like to do this without breaking the bank too.
The Kumhos look attractive, but I dont know much about them.

Randy, what profile of 225 will not work? I'd heard that a 225/45-15 would work on a narrow body car with standard (non-R) 15 x 7 Fuchs or Cookie Cutters. This tire is availble in Toyo RA1 and Kumho v700 and I've been thinking of geting a set for autocross/track days. Or would it be better to stay conservatiave and to a 205/50?

To stay on topic, here are two pics. First is a shot from a track day with Bridgestone S03 in 205/55-15 on 15x7 Fuchs. Second is my current tire, 205/60-15 BFGoodrich g-Force Sport on the same wheels. For touring and mountain rides I like them a lot. But I have not done any track time on them. The S03 is a better tire, very responsive, great in the wet. But does not come in a 60 series and costs almost twice as much as the BFG. I've been getting just a touch of rub sometimes in the right rear with the BFG and will be adding another 1/2 degree of camber soon.

Certainly, the lower the profile the greater chance you will clear the outside fender. As I and Randy Webb have alluded to, not all narrow bodied 911s will accomodate a 225 tire on a standard 7x15 Fuchs. It all depends on which rear quarter panels were fitted on the asssembly line that day and how many beers the factory employee had at lunch that day. It depends on the car - just be careful because chances are you will burn some paint if you try 225 tires on a 7x15 Fuchs rim.

These are my Pirelli P6000s just after I mounted them.
195/65 in front and 215/60 in back. Back wheels are fabricated
shallow 7R wheels - orig 6" in front. You won't find the sticky-est rubber in a 15"size... but I'm happy with these tires.

    185/70R15 = stock/OEM size

    Purchased from a Disty in TX --- after someone here arranged a Group Buy/discount deal . . . ~$100/ea?

    I'm no 'racer' --- more concerned w/ tread-life/durability than anything else . . . although I do like the 'narrow' tire/stock look
