    Were Sportomatics available on a 911S? (1970-71)

I just acquired a 1970 911S Targa after owning four 911Es over the years. Two coupes and two targas...I still own a '73 E Viper Green Euro Targa project car that will be up for sale soon. It's my first S and I'm really stoked! I guess I should change my ID to 911Enot4ME.

The engine is original, but the transmission is a 915. The 1970 models had the 901 with dogleg first, right? From what I know the Sportomatic was not available on the 911S due to the increased power. The previous owner said the car originally came with a Sportomatic, and when that went bad the 915 was swapped in. The decklid is original, and it doesn't have the "Sportomatic" script. The car is a very early '70 production (built 10/69 #115). Is the PO misinformed?

I checked Peter Morgan's book and did not see a designation for 911S Sportomatic 1969- 1971. Mine was a 73 911S Sporto with gearbox 925/01.

The 70- 71 parts book has gold script listed however, if I recall correctly 72- 73 has no script.

    911S4ME,

Welcome to the most charismatic of all the Early 911s.
Enjoy your days with this little gem !
To answer your question - unless it was a special order car,the Sporto trans was not a regular production option on the 2.2L 911S nor the 1969 2.0 911S if my memory serves me correctly.
Others may correct me on this however.
RPO of the Sporto was resumed on the 2.4L 911S due presumeably to the increased torque of the later motor.
Do yourself a BIG favour and get a good dogleg 901/911 trans.
I had two 915 trans in previous 911s and was SO pleased to get back to a proper sporting trans !!
    I may be biased,but.....

    Cheers,
    Dennis.
1970 914-6 - materialised from the 'Lotto' garage into reality
    1971 2.2 911 S - now back in the UK - sob!
1975 Carrera Targa (ROW) - missed.
One of us is fast becoming a valuable antique.
