    McQueen @ Peterson

Just noticed there's a Steve McQueen exhibit at the Peterson Automotive Museum in L.A. Ends in April.

Seems like some enterprising Early Porsche Club might want to organize a run and tour there ... maybe. Here's a link to club tours:

    That reminds me...

I don't think it's been mentioned on the list yet, but in watching the Daytona Grand Am race, they mentioned that Chad McQueen had been in a bad wreck in practice and was seriously injured:

"On Saturday, No. 73 Tafel Racing Porsche GT3 driver Chad McQueen was injured in a collision with the barrier exiting the chicane at the end of the Daytona Superstretch. McQueen was awake following the incident, and was transported to Halifax Medical Center where he is currently in intensive care in serious condition. McQueen was co-driving the No. 73 machine at Daytona Test Days with Jim Tafel, Mike Cawley and Shawn Price."

I hope he makes a complete recovery.

The last I heard on the accident was that he will recover, but is not expected to race again.

As for the Petersen show, the three of us that came out for the Lit and Long Beach shows went to the Petersen that Friday. The McQueen exhibit was the highlight for sure. Lots of nice cars and bikes to see including a 908 and the gray 911S. Worth the trip, especially if you are local to LA.

I believe this has been discussed to death but I thought the 911S at Peterson was not the car used in the movie. I thought the movie car was a 70 and the peterson car is a 69. I do not recall the movie car with early silver wiper arms/blades which would not be correct on a 69 any way. peterson description mentions the display car was used in the movie?

    Boxter,
You are right on all counts...

The '69 was McQueen's car before the movie and came out of Competition Motors...
It has an 'airport' gear set and used to have an engine skid plate... My old mechanic set the car up for him back then... Kevin Bread of Piloti Shoes ('shoedog' on this board) drove it and says it STILL has the short gears...

The slate gray cars in the movie were '70S's (there were two on the set)

And silver wiper blades are wrong for a '69...

While the Peterson got the '69 in the movie wrong... the exhibit is very worthwhile...

    Hope this helps,

    Cheers,

    Hope this helps...

It truly is the 70 in the Movie

I believe it is eccentric collector who owns it now. Kinda strange guy \I doubt anyone will see it soon

The Steve Mcqueen exhibit at the Petersen was/is wonderful. A great date with your significant other. I dare say Laila enjoyed it as much as I did.

As for Chad, he is back in California working hard at physical therapy. He is expected to make a 100% recovery but will not race again. He wants to own a team and race from that side of pit wall.

    All the best
