Hi Nick,i thought that badge always looked good See you at daytona or sebring this winter?
Some interesting statements, why do people expect ex rally or race cars to be perfect, they should not be and a real shame when they loose there irreplaceable history.
Does any one know for sure non lwt panels on a late car, some rsr late build have lwt panels,Not every rs lwt left the factory in pure spec.
A lot of the points on the car or most can be rectified, its a long time ago resto by a non porsche specialist, unless you truly know these cars, most get put back together with wrong detail.
Its achieved good money for what it is,hopefully it will now get a good thrashing not sat on a lawn some where.

I've added a few close up pictures to prior post. 1496 rallied in in early 70s at one point with this Northern Ireland registration number before adopting plates from Leicestershire . NI plates didn't follow the suffix format. Agnew NI Motors delivery was referred to but didn't see this particular licence number listed along with the English format licence plates mentioned in Bonhams sale notices or corrections by Second owner.

Also a picture of vin stamp of the car in saleroom. Attempted in the very short time while lid was open to get reasonably straight above to allow comparison to other known vins for those interested in such details. Not totally square on but maybe moreso than the one on auction site I am not an expert and don't have a strong view on this but spacing and shape of the curls on 6 and 9 but think some forum members have photo references from other MY 72/3 911 and RS vin stamp examples and like to keep a record of such things:

thanks for that extra information Steve, and the photos

here is my attempt at matching that vin stamp with a known good one (albeit earlier in the series)

    New Picture (2).png

it looks "close but not quite" to me - especially on the spacing and the evenness of the stamping also the fonts (look at the differences in the 1)- but I may be wrong

197 was done with a gang stamp, 1496 was not.
My experience with RHD cars is zero, maybe it was done differently, but does not look normal for LHD.
As Clyde said, 197 is the real deal for sure.

A third series RHD below. RHD no different despite the smugglers box being smaller along with narrower flat metal area for stamp.

But numeric vin stamp itself for RHD is same as LHD in my experience. They have the same distinctive 72/3 MY spacing as LHD -- with that characteristic 911 3 xxxx unevenly saved layout with clear gap either side of year digit.

Also note relatively circular small loops evident on the 6 and 9 on this one are also same as 0197 and other RS examples that I'm familiar with. 1496 stamp font seems different font having the more elongated angular slightly straight sided shape noticeable on 6 and 9 small loops. The spacing of 1496 vin overall is self evidently very different without the distinctive gap.

No different for 72/3 T/E/S RS in RHD for that matter so 1496 being a RHD does not explain why there is a different font shape and character spacing on its vin stamp.

Pretty conclusive. Shame that there is no '2' in the forged VIN number, that font of the '2' is always wrong in reprofakes..

    Cheers, Cees
