Thread: 1973 Carrera RS Cars for Sale

I owned 2 first series Touring RS cars #101 and #197 neither of them had thin glass (glaverbel) but securit glass and #197 definately hadn't been touched from new, not so sure about 101.

Maybe I am about to learn something but I thought the thin glass was glaverbel.

I have a series 1 touring with its original thin glass glaverbal still in it.

If I recall correctly, the first series official factory program was that lightweights were returned to the factory from the weighing station and then, with the exception of the windshield, converted back to touring cars with standard touring parts. The Glaverbel rear side windows were removed and replaced with pop-out hardware and Sekurit glass as a step in the interior conversion.

Officially, at least, the thin - and fragile - Glaverbel winshields were left in the cars rather than tempt fate by trying to switch them out. Few survived driving hazards over time, of course. I did own one first series Touring Car with an original Glaverbel windshield and once saw another.

As with everything with RSs, though, exceptions to the established rules abound.

I just made some pictures on my Touring first series car. It has all around Sekurit glass and it seems, that the glass was never out or changed. Car has a heated rear window.

Dick Moran is correct; the most knowledgeable on RS's.

Interesting, I'm assuming just the windshield is Glaverbel

I posted this passage on the RS thin metal thread in the General section but is more appropriate in this discussion.

Interesting passage in the Carrera RS book on pg 79: "In the Touring model the side and rear window were replaced by series production panes (the heated rear window was not available in thin glass). Later the windshield of the M 472 package was replaced by the series production type (of windshield)"

By 'later' I am assuming they mean later in the production cycle but not sure when as there is no mention of a date this occurred on the pages that show the running changes during production.

Is it common for the lightweights to be on a bill of sale rather than a title?

It would be interesting to know which serial number that happened at.
