Did this ever get settled? Stumbled upon this looking for older, period lightweight options. The idea of aluminum bumpers is interesting.

Not on the production cars but the ‘69 GTS cars had a lot of aluminum bits because of the category rules. No FRP.

I wonder how much weight would come off a car built with those parts.
The fellow that is doing aluminum bodywork on a 69 POLO build I'm doing is building a full aluminum car other than the pan. He prefers to remain nameless tell he's done.

He took them off my 69 912. Totally strait, perfect gaps and ZERO rust car. And I mean ZERO rust. This car sat in a garage in Palos Verdes where I grew up for 50 years. The idea for the covered oil lines came from this Carrera. There are 2 scoops to push air along to the rear exhaust exit at the rear wheel well. The thermostat under the hood sends oil back after going through 1 cooler tell 200F. At that point it will go through the second cooler. So the covered oil lines are a moot point in terms of oil temperature. He is very talented and a quick study as I gave him historical perspective and pictures to study. He was apprenticed in the area where all the F1 teams are located in England. I think he's thinking of only building whole cars on customer donor cars. As all panels are made by hand, the panels will need to be fitted.

if you really wanted to know how light the body will be
lay sheets of tin foil on the body parts (will conform well to compound curves)
take the tin foil pieces and lay them flat on floor
then cut-up the tin foil pieces to make squares
you then can find the square feet of area
then you can find the difference in the 1mm steel weight verses the gage of aluminum weight

    Bob,
You are a lot smarter then I am. I never would have thought of that. I think I'll wait and see if someone else takes the time to do that.

    or....
you could have a pizza/beer party
people could wrap the pieces and lay them out to cut into big squares.
