    Watershields cost 5-10hp?!

Thread regarding watershields on Pelican; sorry i don't know how to link it.

I believe it was Steve from Rennsport that offered this estimate based on actual testing results (many variables involved but you get the idea).

How about it? In the space of 2 hours i fell in love with Curt's fiberglass watershields, found out stiffness is important for sealing the filters and then found out the damn shape actually costs hp? And to top it off i read about siezed distributor gears flying through cases

And my wife cried during Titanic; she doesn't know what an emotional rollercoaster is! THIS stuff would have her flat out bawling!

I have K&N sheilds on my car as well. I read the article and thought of getting some flat top covers since I don't spend any time in the rain. Just need to make sure you cover the filters when you wash the car.

I havn't made a change to them because when you reread the article, you'll notice that the performance gain is only in the higher 5000+ RPM. On the track you'd spend alot of time there so it makes cents . How often are you 5k+ on the street? My .02, since the carbon fiber doesn't really save much weight from stock, I passed on them too.

Seeing your other post on ignition, I'd spend the money on an electronic conversion.

Brooke Stabbert did some dyno tests with watershields vs. stock air box vs nothing. The results showed that it's not as easy as saying "it cost 5 HP." In reality, if memory serves, the watershields produced more maximum power, but with less mid range. I think Brooke posted the results on this board. I'd do a search on both. His user name is RSwannabe.

If you have MFI the watershield top is not necessary. PMO makes tops that don't drop down on the sides like watershields. I don't know if this makes a difference, but it seems like air could take a less circuitous path with the "skirtless" top.

    Erik:

There are some variables here with regard to HP losses using the Watershields; displacement & RPM range are the two biggest ones.

Smaller displacement engines that do not run past 6K are not affected very much compared to bigger motors that are operated beyond 7K.

I think Watershields are really an excellent product for what they were designed to do,... We use the "regular" K&N's for high-performance and racing engines for improved HP.

Hi, sorry to sound dumb, but can you explain exactly what you mean by a watershield? I'm trying to work out if I've got them or not. Thanks!

    Good question!

I don't have any pictures here that I can post, but if you take a shot of your engine and either e-mail that to me or post it here, I can tell what you have,..

Yes, Brooke's car had MFI, but it still seems relevant.
