    What To Use For Undercoating?

I'm in the process of stripping the entire undercoating to metal on my 67 project. What are you guys using for interior of fender/quarters, engine bay, and exterior chasis? Does it look better black or color of car? Show me some pictures. Thanks folks. Freddie

I can't recommend an actual textured undercoating but I do highly recommend that you use POR-15 to seal the bare metal. This will seal much better than any undercoating, and, you can still apply an undercoating on top of it. Good luck and make sure you're in the right frame of mind when you embark on hours and hours of what's probably the most trivial work you'll ever do.

I believe for your car....Undercoating, body color, then black brushed on over the top. This is the way my 70 is. I believe late 72 they stopped using the black over the body color. On a SWB I'd stick with the black.

Lola-The POR-15 I have already purchased as a base sealer which I really like.

Michael-Thanks for the imput. Yes it's been hard work indeed but well worth it.

    Thanks for the imput.

I would recommend Por-15 metal prep on bare metal, the stuff is amazing. Not only does it etch the metal, but it dissolves any trace of corrosion when used correctly. On top of the cured por-15 paint, use the recommended etching primer from Por-15. Cured por-15 is so hard that coatings have a hard time sticking, even undercoating. I know this is a couple extra steps, but for rockers and fender wells, you can forget about rust in our lifetime. The Por-15 folks make the finest products I have ever used. The low gloss black looks just like powder coating, and is almost as hard.

I was told that Tectyl 846 is what you need.

Tom's absolutely right, the wurth product is the right stuff. Since you have the surface down to bare metal, I would POR15 "silver" the surface, paint it body color, and then add the Wurth undercoating. When I did my tank, the Wurth gun was not available to apply the product. But what I did find was a product called Gravtex sold at most auto paint stores, that is like the Wurth product but much more viscous, so the finish is not as bumpy. But the Gravtex gun works just like the worth gun and it works with the Wurth bottles and costs only $20 vs the $100 for the Wurth. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the recommendations. Looks like Wurth is the way to go. I'm looking to apply the undercoating light. Any suggestions? I don't want this stuff to look like it's inches thick. Here is a picture of the front end. I have it down to metal. Glad I did this. The car had been setting uncovered for over 10 years. Thanks.

The Gravtex gun will produce the correct texture with Wurth SKS, and it threads on to the Wurth bottle?
