'07 North American Auto Show - Detroit

    Midwest R Gruppe / Early S guys & Friends:

We're going to attend the big auto show on Industry Day - Wednesday January 10, 2007. The tentative plan is to meet at the show around 2PM, wander around for a few hours and then drive over to Vic Rivera's place in Franklin. Vic is going to host a winter BBQ for us! (and we can check out his awesome collection of Porsches in the comfort of his multiple heated garages ). Tickets are $75 and can be purchased on the show's website:

    http://www.naias.com/

If you're going to come, please let me or Vic or Jared know about it, so Vic can plan the food accordingly. Thanks! -- Curt

This idea was hatched yesterday (amongst many others) at our winter "lament over being 911-less 'till spring" lunch. Thanks to Vic for offering his place to hang, which is great because he has his own little auto show goin' on in there.

If you've never been to the "Detroit Auto Show", it really is a worthwhile event. Most of the concept and new production cars debut here. Coming on "Industry Day" is also worthwhile as it avoids the masses of the public days; you can actually see the cars. Requirements to get industry passes have gotten MUCH more lax in the past few years, but you may have to state your "affiliation" when ordering ( for example - with a Porsche Technical Consulting / Engineering Organization... ) .

I would suggest getting there earlier than 2pm, there is SO much to see, you could easily spend an entire day. Hotels in Detroit (at least the ones you would want to stay at) will be booked. The suburbs are your best bet - Vic lives in Franklin MI, and I'm in Birmingham, both about 20 mins from downtown Detroit.

A couple suggestions near Vic and I.

Some of you may also be interested in the Auto Week Design Forum, which is an all day event with industry speakers, and includes preview passes to the show on Jan 10th. You must register for this event - for more info, click here.

OK...back fresh from California and the Ford PAG. Next up is this car show. Curt, send me some recommended really good hotels that won't likely be filled to the brim. I'll need some addy's for mapping the strategy.

Has anyone decided on a meeting time and place? Might be a good idea for the locals to put together an info package and send it out to all who can attend.

Also note: if BYOB, what do you fellas drink? I'll make sure some follows me.

BREAKING EDIT NEWS: I just ordered my ticket online...yeeeeehaaaaaw

Vic would like a count on who will be going to his place after the show. So far I have:

    Bill (Tracy)
    Curt (Kim)
    Doug
    Jared
    Jim
    Paul
    Vic Rivera

Paul, see above post for a few hotel suggestions. They are all near me and Vic (the Birmingham hotels very close to me). If you stay here, I'd be happy to drive you downtown to the show... parking can be a bitch. If you come in through Windsor, we are about 20 mins north of Detroit. Then again, just getting a hotel room in Windsor may be a good idea since Detroit hotels will be booked.

I'll suggest we meet at the Porsche exhibit at 11am, although I'll likely be down there earlier than that.
We can walk around a bit and go to Greektown for lunch.

    Jared,

I'm staying in Birmingham and could meet somewhere for that ride offer. Early would be good; I hope not to leave anything unseen and need to set aside a few minutes to meet with C. Bangle so's I can ask him how he came to uglify the perviously stellar 5-series. Please tell Vic to have that Signal Orange '71 T ready for me so I can bring it back home where it belongs.
