    safety colors

the vivid colors of the late sixties/seventies were also promoted as (passive) safety items, since a car with bright color was seen better in traffic.
(actually, Orange was best seen from a distance or in fog, as tested in rally cars)

Porsche and also Mercedes promoted this aspect in their press releases and brochures around 1970.

It seems like the vast majority of new German cars today are some hue of silver, so as long as we move away from that, I am OK!

I think the only company with an interesting color pallette these days is Audi, specifically those offered on the TT, and most of those are fairly muted tones. I also think the bright oranges, yellows, and reds of the muscle car era will continue to seep into modern production, as will graphics. Apart from that, black will always suggest class and white will scream rental car.

Thanks Peter, that Challenger is exactly what I'm talking about; ultimately the ideas expressed in concept cars find their way to production, especially the colors.

I really don't mean to knock specific colors, it's all just opinion anyway, and that of a bored automotive observer at best, but I think the important thing to remember is that the color does not make the car.

If the design is original and destinct, the performance impresses or earns a reputation, and the car accurately represents or even elevates the brand, then the color just graces the body. Otherwise, cars begin to resemble appliances. That having been said, I don't think I've seen a white Cayman, but I'd like to!

Great photo Chuck!!! These early cars look terrific in all colors, through all the years and it is only our perception that differs. I dig em all.

I saw a 72T in Gold metallic that stopped me in my tracks last Spring. Almost bought that car. It seems to be a rather rare color that almost had me change my mind on my current repaint. Ultimately, I didn't think the PORSCHE side decal would look as good as in Original Blut Orange. nuf said.
