Thread: My Four Eyed Raccoon Car

  1. #21
Some very interesting comments and alternative ideas. I thought I could anticipate the feedback, OE camp "NO" and Non-OE camp "YES", but that has not been the case. The opinions are all over the place from both camps.
Here are some examples of anti-chrome lighting:

Great thread...hilarious entertainment value. Ask not how your 'look' appears to others, ask how your 'look' appears to you (really bad take on JFK speech). It has shock value and I like it, but probably wouldn't do it to my own car.

Bob - I think the black headlamp rims & foglamps look OK on red/orange cars but for some reason I don't think it works on lighter-coloured cars (including silver) - too much of a contrast ?

But, like several people have already said, it's what you think about it that counts...

As the old saying goes: "The cheese stands alone."

I guess since I'm the only one who likes it, you can call me "Gouda."

Scott (t6dpilot), I may have a spare set of the lights from when I had my 914-6. I'll check tomorrow if you're interested ... or anyone else, for that matter.

In scanning thru a bunch of my photos, there are a surprising number of black headlight rings! Never really noticed that before. Why not go hardcore? Chrome rings with black electrical tape?

Yeah, it was pretty common look on R, S, ST from 67-72. I have it on my white race car and like it.

Maybe an issue with reflecting glare?

Bob, I like the lights and rings but, not as keen on the black grills. I'm probably to used to seeing the chrome grills next to the chrome trimmed turn signals. Chrome grills or no grills would be my only suggestion. And....my pleasure It makes me feel like a pimp to the stars.

Agreed Paul - very entertaining! I do appreciate the feedback from all. The 914 fogs can be purchased all day long on Ebay but finding a really nice set is difficult. The set Michael sold me were very close to NOS condition.
This is just me and my mind set but the lighting system needs to be seen as whole. Chrome rings = chrome fogs, black rings = black fogs. The horn grills are negotiable.
I have attached a pic of a Cibie ad from Panorama Dec 1968. Does anybody know what fog/driving light model are pictured? Also, I recently purchased all issues of 1967-68 Panorama from Ebay. Very interesting reading. Within one issue there is a "how to" make your own grill brackets for verticaly mounted foglights so that you don't have to cut up the grills. They would work with the Cibies as shown.
