(Almost) everything you ever wanted to see regarding LSDs and 901 trannies

I have compiled, with meritorious assistance from Bernie B, a lineup of reference pictures of 901 LSDs. My goal was specifically around cataloging LSDs for non-Nadella type 901 transmissions. The below photos comprise, I believe, a complete photo catalog of what is out there.

BTW, the last photo is of the ultra rare, extended drive flanges required for the LSD to be used in non-Nadella type, aluminum 901 transmissions like the one I have in my early '69S.

    Enjoy!

The LSD for the mag case 901 tranny is the same LSD for use in the early, course splined, mag cased 915 trannys. They are interchangable. Do not confuse these with the later differentials for use with the 915 tranny with fine splines.

The new Torsen units from Guard are about US$2500. The old ZF unit prices are essentially in the eye of the beholder.

It all depends on which transmission you have (Nadella 901, non-Nadella ally 901, mag 901, mag 915, ally 915).

I own a very odd early '69S that has one of the uncommon non-Nadella type aluminum 901 trannies. If given a choice for my transmission, I'd buy the ZF since the clutches in the ZF allow the LSD to work on both acceleration AND deceleration; the Torsen only acts on acceleration. That said, the ZF LSDs are clutch based, so they do wear out and require occasional rebuilds. The Torsen LSDs don't need rebuilding due to not having a clutch mechanism.
