    How to confirm matching number.

    Hi.

I am trying to register my '72 911E in Hong Kong. They have asked me to prove the engine is the original.

I have read somewhere where you can get a "Certificate of Authenticity'. Does this show the chassis and engine number? Where can I get this from - Porsche in Stuttgart? or can a OPC get this information for me? How long does it take to get one?

    Thanks
    Derek

    Derek,
Yes a COA will have that information, you can order one through the Porsche Club of America, takes about 3-4 weeks. If you post your engine serial number I can look it up to see if it is correct for year and model of car.

    Chassis # 9112200848

    Engine # 6221307

    Thanks.

I am not a member of PCA, I need to produce evidence. Is there a quicker way to get to prove numbers match?

    cheers

Also, does anyone know if there is an 'engine type' code that is stamped anywhere? My Regestration doscument shows 'Engine Type: 9116'

the engine code is on the right hand side next to the turbine
on the vertical part is the engine serial number, a little further to the front of your car on the horizontal part of the engine (just above the camshaft oil connection) is the engine type number
I think for an E it must be 911/52 and 911/62 for a Sporto
I think 9116 must stand for 911- 6 cilinder but as far as i know this is not on the car somewhere

Sorry i have no pictures here to make this easier

What happens if the engine is not the original one? What would happen to your car if you tossed a rod through the case?

I think that 9116 is the 4-5 digit production code. I am not familiar w/ mag cases, but on an alu case this is nex to the engine type.

If the engine is not original, I will not be able to reg it in Hong Kong. I will have to ship it home.........will be a big waste of time and money!

Thanks Richard for the photo, that is a useful bit of information.

    Cheers

Type Engine type Engine spec. VIN/Chassis number Engineserialnumber Number of cars
    911 E Coupe 911/52 165/6200 206/4500 9112200001-9112201124 6220001-6221765 1124
    911 E Targa 911/52 165/6200 206/4500 9112210001-9112210861 6220001-6221765 861

As you can see the engine is a 1972 E-engine. The car looks like its from the middle/late of the production run(808 out of 1124 1972 coupe's made) and the engine a middle to late production 1972(1307 engine out of 1765 engines) The engine is very close to be correct when VIN is compared to engine serialnumber. I think the chances are good that your engine is the original. You can try to send the classic department at Porsche your request, I got them to confirm an engine to a VIN for me last year by email.

Have you tried getting help from the Porsche dealership in HK? Porsche.com lists the dealership as Jebsen & Co at 852 2926 2911. They also list a Macau tel #. I would think that Porsche would be able to help you work through the red tape.
