Thread: attention any and all pre 1970 owners

While we are discussing VIN plates/stickers...

On a related subject, a few years ago, I discovered that the commonly published VIN tables had the factory relationship to the VIN incorrect for 912 Coupes of MY 69. This was confirmed by Dr. Brett Johnson and attributed to bad information from the factory. I assume this community is aware of this also.

The tables show VIN 12900#### as Karman Chassis and 12902#### as Porsche, when the plate on the driver's door hinge post indicated exactly the opposite.

As I recall, Dr. Johnson also indicated the 911 tables were incorrect - i.e.: 11910#### has been published as being a Karman 911T and 11912#### Porsche 911T chassis. Similarly for 911E (11920#### & 11922####).

But in reviewing the table in his book (the same information is published else where) - it indicates the 911S were only produced in one factory and shows 11930#### as Karman Chassis. Is that also in error???

Seems that the S was only produced at Porsche all years prior to MY69, so I suspect it is incorrect, as well as the tables for all the following model years. If that is the case - then T's for MY 71 were the last 911's built at Karman rather then all non-T coupes and all coupes MY 72 and later being built at Karman as the tables indicate (the version of the table I am looking at only goes to MY 73).

Or - did Karman manufacture the coupe chassis and Porsche produce only Targa's and (I would assume) 914's?

Don, I once read all S models have been built only at the Stuttgart factory, never at Karmann in Osnabrück.
    Maybe someone can confirm this.
Karmann did build 914's since I have an unique Karmann 914 promo booklet.

Here is the CORRECT table for 912's.

It is only a problem starting in 69. 68 is correct.

    I don't have a breakdown as to US/ROW.
