Thread: correct undercoating for 1971 911T

  1. #1

Question correct undercoating for 1971 911T

I need help finding the original type undercoating Porsche used for the engine bay. For the 1971 model year porsche first sprayed undercoating around the engine bay, next they painted the bay body-color, then finally brushed black semigloss paint over the body-colored paint.

What I need to find out is what undercoating is correct. My car only has 40,000 miles, but because of the dry climate here, this stuff has cracked off and is loose in many places. I have read that the correct undercoating is schutz. Can someone explain what this is and who makes it? I am in the process of redoing my gas tank, which uses Wurth stoneguard SKS, but I do not believe this is it as the undercoating in the engine bay is very thin vs. the thick SKS on gas tank (see picture). Help!

follow this thread, and the answers should lie within?

don't forget to remove the "whole lot" with paint stripper. clean it up properly afterwards using phosphoric acid prior to priming.use seam sealer afterwards, where necessary and spray on stone guard and then final color. always follow manufacturers recommendation for preparing/applying correct thickness of primer, stoneguard etc.
the stuff rhat they used in the "old days" was pretty well rubbish compared to modern 2k automotive primers, stone guard, enamels etc.

do this properly now,and it will last longer than the factory stuff already on there?.

    Eric-
It looks like you car just got a thin coat. Most closely resemble the finish on the gas tank. Perhaps this is why yours has flaked off. I had to work, hard, to remove my undercoating from my '70E. Its finish closely resembled my tank's. I just got my Wurth SKS and gun today. SKS is the right product for both applications (in grey). On the first warm day I will be applying it to the engine compartment and the tank.

    This is interesting.
My unrestored 71 (respray recently in original color 018) has its engine bay painted black over its original body color 018 which can still be seen on some spots. I somewhat believed this was wrong....but I do was wondering why its there because it looks like original "old" black paint.

Since respray of exterior of the car (undo of seals, windows, trims, doors etc. to have it done properly) and conserving as much as possible of its original color (trunk, tank, undercoating of chassis etc.) its engine area was left the way it was unless we are shure its not period...and I was'nt 100% shure at that time.
My mechanic was saying the motor/transmission was never removed from the car and some previous owners did say the same.

Here a pic from the area when I bought the car (ignore wrong decal positions and rubber buttons).
So black engine bay might be original from 1971 ?:

As I recall from reading the correct books the engine bay for 71 should be flat black on top of body colour on top of Wurth SKS. The front compartment in body colour on top of Wurth SKS in the lower part of the compartment and just body colouor in the upper part. Tank in SKS, but not sure if the SKS was oversprayed with something on the tank, but I just got confirmed it should be grey like the SKS.

Some trunk compartments were black and others body color. It seems that the Karman cars were allways black, but that Reuter cars became body color, perhaps as early as '70. All engine compartments were black until '73, regardless of source. The tank on my '70 was just SKS, badly discolored (looked black). I stripped the tank to bare metal, and can be sure that it was not top coated. There have been several threads about this issue.

Hey guys, I have a 71T that was built in 2/70 (if I have that correct). I have confirmed that this car is an extremely original and correct car, so we can use it as an example. The trunk is body color, the tank is grey SKS, and the engine compartment is brushed black gloss over body color and undercoating. It is a Karmann car BTW. Zithlord and Scott are correct.

    Scott-
That suggests that Karmann did change after my car was made (10/69). Anyone else have experience with Karman cars between 10/69 and 2/70?

    Scott, I think you mean 12/70 not 2/70 right? 2/70 would mean it's a 70MY not 71MY.

It does look like you got a "late Friday afternoon" coating there. The under coating in the engine compartment is the same as the trunk. On my 1/70 70S (not a Karmann) the trunk did not get the black brushed over the body color. Only the engine compartment.
