    Rear Wiper Questions

Let me just say I think rear wipers are cool.

Could someone tell me how they are controlled... is the wiper switch specific to that option? Does it operate the rear separately or does it run at interval when the fronts are on?

Also, was this option installed on aluminum decklids? Anyone have one?

    Thanks, just satisfying my curiosity.

I agree completely. I think rear wipers on an early, clean decklid looks fantastic. In my opinion it gives the car more of a "euro" look, as I've noticed that while rear wipers in the states are very rare, they seem to be on the majority of all years of 911's in Europe. I find this interesting, because I read somewhere (The Porsche 911 Story, maybe?) that due to the design and airflow around the rear window, a wiper is unnecessary. Also, if you look at very early press and publicity photos of the 911, many of them have rear wipers. Unfortunately, I cannot answer your question, as mine doesn't have one. If originality wasn't such an issue with our early cars, I would definitely consider a retro-fit.

I have an aluminum engine lid from a '70-'71 S in original condition, including silver paint, and it has a full rear wiper assembly installed.

    Gents,

I have a '71S and the rear wiper option is on the COA. I have an aluminum deck lid as well. My wiper assembly came in box with the car. I need to get it on the car though.

    Hope that helps,

    Hi,

It is controlled by a separate "pull" switch on the dash and is not dependant on the front wipers.

I have 3 UK RHD cars (pre 73) at the moment and each of them has a rear wipe.

    Thanks

    Alan

Thanks for the info guys. That's an interesting point about the aerodynamics keeping the window clear, even in Seattle I have never felt in need of a rear wiper. They are quite rare in the states, but I think they add a purposeful, rally quality to the car.

    Thanks again,

Attached is a little better picture of the switch, as that was what I was specifically targeting...

As others have indicated, aluminum decklids apparently could be fitted with wipers. I have an NOS one in my parts hoarde (and no, it's NOT for sale! ), and while it's not drilled out for the wiper shaft the inner structure does have the sleeves for it on both sides.

Next rear wiper question... as is apparent by the switch, my S came with a rear wiper. This was removed when the car was retrofitted with A/C, to make space for the condenser. The prior owner of 30-some years still has the wiper assembly to give me. He claims that by lengthening the shaft, it can be made to work with the condenser in place.

Has anybody done this? Does a modification kit exist to do this? Or was there really a different wiper assembly that was used on cars that had both a rear wiper and A/C?

I wonder if an aluminum decklid is strong enough to support both an A/C condenser and a wiper assembly...

    Mr.Bill.

your photo above would be the trip odometer set back (it turns). The rear wiper (I believe) is a pull on switch (above the ignition) to the left of the steering wheel.

The latch attachment spar on the aluminum lid is subject to a lot of crushing just from a heavy handed closure, look closely and most have initial cracks and tears. By adding the AC condenser and the weight of the rear wiper it would need a special "caution - hands off - what are you a caveman?" notice to all who would manhandle it's closing.

    Couple of Questions

When did aluminum engine lids first show up? And how about rear wipers?

    Thanks,

I think he was referring to the switch below the trip odometer set back?
