    Fan Shroud Discrepency

Okay, so I know that the 1970 - 1972 car's had fan shrouds that came with a one-piece, riveted air guide (the gray piece). I was under the impression that this was the case for 1973 cars as well.

Recently, however, I have seen numerous, original, one-owner 1973 cars that have a two-piece air guide (the gray piece).

The rub is that I have also seen numerous 1973 cars with the one-piece air guide.

So what's the deal? Are 1973 cars supposed to have a one-piece or two-piece air guide on the fan shroud? I hypothesize that the early '73s had the one piece air guide and later '73s came with the two piece.

This is one of those "Cottage Industry Mysteries" of vintage Porsches; nobody really knows for sure, but we may be able to get a general consensus.

    Great question Marco...

Mine is an April build '73S #1099 and has an original, separate, gray, riveted deflector....

    Cheers,

    Marco,

Here is what I have on all origional cars:
    70T Long riveted grey
    72T Long riveted grey
    73T Short bolt on grey
    73E Short bolt on grey
    74S Short bolt on grey
77 Carrera Short bolt on grey
The 72-73 parts book only shows the short piece type shroud. (it was a problem ordering parts at the time) My guess it that they were using up inventory or just another mid year change.
I have a shroud that has no deflector or place for one. I got it with some other parts so I don't know the history.

    That's kinda what I suspected.

Another perfect example of the above: I just had the motor and trans out of a customer's matching number 73.5 T. Turns out the tranny was a 1972 (inside seal).

Sorry... I typed too fast and thought too slow...

My gray air guide is short and bolted as Harvey said...
The black metal deflector on the bottom of the shroud is riveted on...

    Hope this helps,
