I know of a model year 72 S RHD Sepia Sportomatic kept in very nice condition by friend who is car's long term owner since 80s. Assume not many examples were sold this side of the pond that year with that particular configuration.

By the October of 72 for model year 73 a 911 S with Sportomatic was about £25 more expensive than the Carrera RS Sport (M471) as listed on the same UK price list so not sure how many they sold that next model year, year brown or otherwise. Likely rarer and less hard use by rally and racing community if any were bought, however.

Of course it's been stashed away for 30 years; an awful experience to drive it or be seen in it.
If it's a '72 no one would know they were seeing one unless they peered inside.

A friend of mine said "you got to try this Sporto" So I did and could not get the hang of it. I was grinding gears all over the place.
Then when my friend took the wheel--he did fine. Terrible experience for me. Chris

Oh no, you've made that point too many times to count. Mine was that '68-71s wear the decklid badge of shame but '72-73s (and the middies and SCs) do not.

It's not the badge that gives it away.

    It's the slipping clutch sound.

Reviving a very old thread. Are the Sportos still holding firm with the manual cars in terms of value?

    Yes.
Along with 912’s all 3 are neck and neck. And neck.
