BaT Description:

This 1973 Porsche 911E Targa has been with the seller for 26 years and is powered by a 2.4L flat-six paired to a 915 5-speed manual transmission. Finished in Viper Green, the car had been stored in a climate-controlled warehouse for 15 years before being removed three years ago and serviced with updated chain tensioners, a replacement gas tank, fresh brakes, and new tires. It has since been driven during the past three summers. Modifications include rear fender flares, a whale-tail spoiler, impact-style rear bumper, cloth sport seats, an aftermarket steering wheel, and an Alpine stereo. This longhood 911 is being sold with its targa top and a clean Ohio title in the seller’s name.

The car was repainted in its original Viper Green shade in 1993, including the roll bar. A whale tail and impact-style rear bumper were fitted at this time and also painted. Some chips and blemishes are noted on the rear bumper, and rear fender flares have also been added. 16″ Fuchs wheels are wrapped in Kumho tires that were installed three years ago along with new brakes and rotors. The Porsche lightbar appears loose, and a targa top is included in the sale.

Cloth sport seats and an aftermarket three-spoke steering wheel were added in the early 1990s. Some adhesive residue is apparent in the rear of the cockpit as shown in the gallery. An older aftermarket Alpine head unit was fitted in the dash. The seller had the odometer replaced in 1993 and it currently reads just under 9,900 miles. Approximately 15k miles were added during the seller’s 26 years of ownership, though true mileage is unknown.

The fuel-injected 2.4L flat-six is paired to a 915 5-speed manual gearbox. After long term storage ended three years ago, the seller replaced the batteries, alternator, air and fuel filters, wires, plugs, and fluids. A new steel gas tank and updated 911 chain tensioners were also installed, and the seller reports of several four-hour road trips with no issues.

Record of ownership is retained back to 1977. Of the 911 models offered in 72, the 911E was the rarest. Only 861 911 E Targas were built in 1972, which is the most desirable year of the 69-73 Longhood Porsches. In 72 Porsche engineered the oil tank in front of the rear mounted engine and featured a filling cap on the rear fender. This only lasted one year as many cars engine oil fillers were filled with gas. This forward oil tank was reintroduced in the 964 cars as the benefits of moving the weight forward were realized. In 72, the 911 engine was increased to 2.4 Litres and the gear box was updated to the 905 5-speed unit. The engine is completely free of leaks and drives beautifully. This anodized aluminum trim on this Targa is all original and has preserved its original finish. This Targa’s doors close with the unmistakeable Porsche solid feeling that is not common on older Targas. The original steering wheel, tool kit, and owner’s manual are included with the car.

Auction Description:

This is a beautiful and highly optioned numbers-matching 1973 Porsche 911E Coupe, VIN 9113201070, finished in the original Gemini Blue Metallic over black, with the original 2.4E mechanically fuel injected engine and the rare original sportomatic transmission. With a recent cosmetic and mechanical restoration, this car ready to enjoy immediately.

The first three owners of the car were from the South Dakota area, where the car was routinely serviced at Carousel Porsche in Minnesota (the closest franchise dealer to Sioux Falls, SD) as well as Classic Import Repair in Sioux Falls. In 2008, the car came to California, where it was serviced by Auto Werkstatt in Manhattan Beach for a time, and more recently by the consignor at TLG Auto and AIR MotorSports. A complete engine rebuild at Carousel Porsche was completed in 1997-98 (approximately 20,000 miles ago) at a cost of over $10,000 (documents available). The front suspension pan was replaced by AIR in 2014, but all other body panels appear to be original.

The consignor commissioned a glass out repaint of the car by AIR in 2016, and TLG Auto rebuilt the original sportomatic transmission in 2017. As part of the consignor’s refurbishment, the dash was repaired, the modern stereo was removed and replaced with a correct and fully functioning Becker Europa, the seats were recovered and a few other interior details attended to.

The car has the original Fuchs wheels, the jack, the original owner’s manual and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. The car was a US delivery car with a build date around April of 1973 and included light alloy wheels, stabilizer bars front & rear, chrome fender trim, S trim and instruments, tinted glass and a Becker Europa radio (all present).

The COA confirms that the engine and transmission are original to the car (the original engine number per the COA is 6239260 and the original transmission number is 630509). In addition, the car has dealer installed AC, aluminum “S” front calipers and a steel “S” front bumper.

The sportomatic transmission, with its clutchless shifting, was years ahead of its time. To prove it’s durability, Vic Elford raced a 1967 911R equipped with a sportomatic transmission, in which after 84 grueling hours on the Nurburgring Nordschleife, he brought his blood orange 911R to victory in the aptly named Marathon de la Route race of 1967. Over the years, many sportomatics were converted to full manual transmissions, so very few remain in existence as originally configured. The four-speed clutchless manual in this car has just been rebuilt, and is ready for touring or racing.
