BaT Description:

This 1972 Porsche 911T is a non-sunroof coupe that was acquired 20 years ago by the seller, who has since refurbished the car himself. Work included a repaint in Light Yellow, as well as the installation of new body rubber and trim. The interior has been fitted with new carpets and upholstery, and the tachometer was restored. A rebuild of the matching-numbers 2.4-liter flat-six included new rings, bearings, valves, a polished crank, 40 IDA Weber carburetors, and more as outlined below. The 915 transaxle has also been rebuilt, and the fuel tank was refurbished. About 1,100 miles have been added since the work was completed, and the car was featured in Classic Porsche magazine. This 911T is now being offered with an owner’s manual, tool kit, Porsche Production Specifications certificate, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

The seller reports that he stripped the car down to the bare tub before it was repainted in the factory Light Yellow. Gold scripting adorns the rear deck lid, and 911S exterior trim has been added. The seller notes one or two small blemishes in the rear grille, and that the rear window defroster is not connected. The external oil filler door unique to this year model 911. New windshields seals, door gaskets, blinker gaskets, door plugs, and bumper rubber were installed during reassembly. The front bumperettes were also replaced, though the rear units are said to shows signs of age. The 15” Fuchs alloy wheels have Porsche crest center caps and wear Mastercraft MC-440 tires.

The interior was originally brown but was changed to black by a previous owner. The seats have been upholstered in black leatherette and new carpets were installed. The tachometer was also restored by Palo Alto Speedometer with upgraded electronics. Approximately 1,100 miles are shown on the odometer, which reflects the distance covered since the refurbishment was completed. The front trunk features a new carpet kit and contains a tool kit.

The 2.4-liter flat-six was rebuilt with a polished crank and new rings, bearings, valves, exhaust guides, heater ducting tubes, and Turbo valve covers. The Weber 40 IDA carburetors were rebuilt, and the engine also features new plugs, points, cap, rotor, and ignition wires. The 915 5-speed transmission was rebuilt with new 1st and 2nd gear synchros, a new 1st gear, sliders, and new shift bushings. The engine sound pad was replaced, and the seller performed an oil change 200 miles ago.

Stamping *6122456* matches the Porsche Production Specifications certificate, confirming the engine as original. New undercoating has been applied, and the fuel tank was cleaned, recoated, and repainted. The Porsche Production Specifications certificate indicates a production completion date of March 16, 1972 and shows the original powertrain numbers.

Auction Description:

According to the certificate of authenticity this matching numbers car has been repainted to its original factory colour Sepia brown with a dark brown interior. A modest 51,000 miles has been recorded on its odometer and as a result, the car remains in very good and original condition throughout. Mechanically the engine has been taken apart and resealed with new rings, pistons and cylinders. Runs and drives very well. The car is fitted with the original 15” Fuchs wheels.

This Porsche 911T Targa was sold new at Prestige Automobiles, Inc. of Grand Rapids, Michigan and has been with its current owner for eight years. The car is finished in Light Yellow over a black leatherette interior and powered by its original 2.2-liter flat-six paired with a 5-speed manual transaxle. Equipment includes Fuchs wheels, a replacement Blaupunkt Richmond AM/FM cassette deck, and Cocomats. Service in the last four years reportedly consisted of a new brake master cylinder, pedal bushings, engine seals, fuel pump, CDI ignition unit, and heater cables as well as refurbishment the fuel tank and targa top. This 911 is offered by the seller on behalf of its current owner with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, records since 2011, a tool kit and spare tire, factory literature, and a clean Washington State title in the owner’s name.

Originally finished in Light Ivory, the exterior was repainted in Light Yellow along with the inside of the trunk, engine compartment, and door jambs. The work was carried out under current ownership and new rubber trim, exterior seals, and moldings were installed as needed. Fading of the chrome on the edge of the front bumper is noted. Tinted glass was included all around from the factory. Fuchs 15″ wheels were optioned new and wear 185/70 Pirelli Cinturato tires mounted in 2016. The interior features black leatherette upholstery with matching door panels, while Cocomats protect the carpets. Refurbishment of the targa top was performed in 2018 and included a new felt headliner. A crack is noted on the dashboard. The factory Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio has been replaced with a Richmond AM/FM cassette deck, and the electric clock was repaired within the last four years. The 5-digit odometer shows 68k miles, approximately 3k of which were added by the current owner.

This 1969 Porsche 911T was purchased by the current owner’s aunt in the early 1970s in Southern California and eventually moved with her to San Francisco, where it was stored for several years until being purchased by the current owner in 2002. A 2.7-liter flat-six from a 1975 911S was installed in 2012 after being rebuilt and modified with Weber carburetors, ported and relieved cylinder heads, early headers, and more. The car is finished in Light Ivory over black leatherette and features a 4-speed manual transaxle. This 911T is now being offered on behalf of the current owner by a friend. The sale includes a driver’s manual, service records, and a clean Minnesota title.

The Light Ivory exterior shows chipping and other finish imperfections from age, most notably on the front bumper and hood. A dent is present on the left rear quarter panel, and a rust spot can be seen on the right front quarter panel behind the wheel well. 15” ventilated steel wheels are finished in white with chrome wheel covers. US-market sugar scoop headlights are retained, and the car is equipped with front and rear bumperettes along with fog lights.

The interior features black leatherette upholstery and charcoal carpets. An aftermarket CD player has been added in the dash. The car is equipped with air conditioning, but the seller notes it is inoperable and it is unknown if the system is fully intact. A crack is present in the dash to the right of the instrument cluster. The odometer shows just under 57k miles and is said to work, but total mileage is not known. The current owner has added about 15k miles, 10k of which were covered after the replacement engine was installed.

The 2.7-liter flat-six (*6452006*) was sourced from a 1975 911S and rebuilt prior to installation in 2012 by a Porsche specialist. Triple-barrel Weber downdraft carburetors were fitted in lieu of the factory fuel injection system, and the cylinder heads were ported and relieved. S-specification camshafts were also installed in addition to early exhaust headers with heat exchangers. Shifting is through the stock 4-speed manual transaxle, and the most recent service was a tune-up in January 2019. Service records included in the sale date back to 1972. Also included are a driver’s manual and several photos of the car from before the current owner purchased it from his aunt. A Porsche Certificate of Authenticity has been ordered to replace one that was sent for the incorrect car, and the correct CoA will be passed along to the new owner once it arrives.
