    BaT Description:

This 1973.5 Porsche 911T Targa has been with the seller for 38 years and retains its numbers-matching 2.4L flat-six and factory sport seats. These half-year models were the final longhoods to appear before the 1974 introduction of the impact bumper 911, and they feature extended rubber bumperettes as well as Bosch CIS injection. This California blue-plate example was sold new in Santa Cruz and spent time in San Jose and Santa Barbara with the seller, who became its second owner after purchasing it in 1979. Described as a largely stock driver with some cosmetic needs, it is sold with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, records since 1993, and a clean California title.

A partial repaint in original Oxford Blue took place in the early 1980s, with varying levels of fading indicating the respective ages of the two finishes. The car has been garaged or covered since 1979, and the rust in a lower corner of the driver’s door has reportedly remained visually unchanged for the past 20 years. Further body issues include a damaged lower front valance and cracking on the rear license plate panel. Stock US-market headlights are retained along with factory badging.

Original Fuchs wheels wear a faded black inner finish and are mounted with Yokohama AVS tires. The removable targa roof panel was fitted with an aftermarket vinyl cover in 2004, while other trim is showing its age according to the seller. The car wears a California blue license plate in the rear, and the front plate is unmounted but included separately.

Factory sport seats were reupholstered in full black leatherette in 2010, omitting their original houndstooth inserts. A set of dash cracks have reportedly been present since the seller’s 1979 purchase, and carpets show several areas of wear. Instrumentation is said to work well aside from the clock, which loses a few minutes per day. Just over 68k miles are shown on the 5-digit odometer, with total mileage at 168k according to the seller. The original Blaupunkt radio was replaced in 1990 with another Blaupunkt cassette player, and subwoofer leads are visible in the rear parcel area.

The numbers-matching 2.4L flat-six retains its Bosch CIS fuel injection and is said to be stock aside from an aftermarket pop-off valve. Shifting is via a 5-speed manual gearbox that is also said to be original, though its number stamp has been scraped off due to periodic contact with the road. An engine and transmission rebuild were reportedly carried out in 1992 at 98k miles by Ken’s Porsche Technique (now Ken’s Sportech) in Campbell, California.

The front cargo area retains a factory jack and tool roll. The car has been driven approximately 100k miles by the seller over nearly four decades, including 2,000 during the last five years.

Underbody photos show the general condition of the drivetrain as well as the floors and wheel wells, which are said to be in good condition with intact undercoating. The delaminated original fuel tank was replaced with a fresher item from a 1979 car during the 1990s engine work. A July 2017 service included a throttle cable repair and lubrication of the steering column linkage. The Porsche CoA confirms the original color and engine number, as well as the factory sport seats, Fuchs wheels, and other options. A matching engine stamp is pictured. The sale includes the original owner’s manual and a maintenance booklet noting the car was approved for sale in California. Service records date back to 1993, while those prior were lost in a housing move, including those from the 1992 engine and transmission work.

    BaT Description:

This 1972 Porsche 911T is a largely unmodified coupe that was acquired more than 35 years ago by the seller, who is a mechanic by trade and has daily driven the car 42k miles during his ownership. A recent service performed by the seller involved removal of the 2.4L flat-six and 915 5-speed manual transmission for resealing. Other work at the same time consisted of installing a new muffler, engine mounts, heater hoses, and more as detailed below. Described as stock aside from Weber carburetors, Carrera tensioners, and a handful of other mild mechanical updates, this longhood 911 driver is now being offered with a clean Oregon title in the seller’s name.

The body was repainted in the pale 1980s version of Iris Blue Metallic, which now shows small bubbles in all horizontal areas per the seller. Other blemishes include various paint chips, dings in the rear license plate panel, and a chip in the windshield. A dent is pointed out in the right rear bumper cover, and distortion is visible in the chrome driver-side rocker trim. Black and polished Fuchs wheels wear Toyo Proxes rubber.

Black leatherette upholstery is new on the driver’s seat, while the passenger side was formerly protected by a sheepskin cover. A new dash cover was fitted in years past and some distortion remains around the defroster vents. Just under 45k miles are shown on the 5-digit odometer, which has rolled once according to the seller. An aftermarket CD player has replaced the original radio, and a replacement carpet kit has been added in the front trunk compartment.

The 2.4L flat-six is said to be original and its number stamp is shown in the photos below, though no CoA is available for confirmation. A set of Weber carburetors replaced the factory mechanical fuel injection prior to the seller’s ownership. New cylinders and rings were installed at 103k miles soon after the seller’s purchase in the early 1980s. Fresh timing chains, Carrera tensioners, and sliders were also installed at that time, along with a new intermediate shaft and bearings.

An engine-out service in winter 2016 included a valve adjustment, installation of new oil lines, and general cleaning. RSR-style rocker shaft O-rings were installed along with new axle seals for the 915 5-speed transmission. The engine is said to use some oil and to smoke on start-up due to weak valve guides.

The recent winter service also saw repacking of the axle CV joints and installation of fresh rubber boots along with a new muffler, engine mounts, sway bar mounts, and heater hoses. Suspension is said to retain original shocks, while some bushings have been replaced by the seller. Underbody photos show the general condition of the drivetrain and floors.

The seller is a mechanic by trade and has personally performed all maintenance for over three decades and 42k miles of daily driving, with service records nonexistent as a result. No history is known from the 1970s prior to the seller’s ownership.

Any idea why the VERY low sale price, i.e. was the car a mess (not obvious from the photo), someone chose the NO RESERVE option to sell the car and got unlucky, or the market has collapsed further than what is already evident. Curious minds want to know .

  10. #1770
It was an overall 3- driver.... Seller tried selling it several times at the same auction (where they bought it for much more
I believe the auction wouldn't take it with a reserve this time.
