“A car is only original once” is the common mantra that is said by Porsche collectors who value originality above all else, and this Emerald Green 1973 Porsche 911T Targa checks all the boxes: Exceptionally low 34,681 original miles, original Emerald Green paint and black interior, and Porsche 911S options added at the Porsche factory. Paired with Canepa’s 634 hours of industry-leading preservation work painstakingly performed and documented on all of its systems and components, this original survivor 1973 Porsche 911T Targa is a fantastic preservation example.

On October 22nd, 1973 Jack Good of Riverwoods, Illinois traded in his 1970 911E for a new 1973 Porsche 911T Targa in stunning Emerald Green paint. Shoreline Porsche in Winnetka, Illinois gave him $5,500 for his trade-in towards the total price of $10,545.50. The new Targa featured factory 911S options: 6” Fuchs wheels, a factory 911S front spoiler, 911S Koni Shock Absorbers, and front and rear stabilizers. It was also ordered with a Blaupunkt “Frankfurt” radio, the comfort kit, fog lamps and tinted glass. Unique to this car due to it being a late model 1973, it is equipped with Bosch’s K-Jetronic Continuous Injection System (CIS).

Its next recorded owner, Graham Loynd of Richland, WA sold the car to Ken McAllister of Yakima, Washington in September of 1987 with 10,880 miles on the odometer. McAllister would sell the car in August of 1990 with 11,729 miles on the odometer, and the Targa over the next 5 years cover only a few more thousand miles. It received a major engine service in May of 1993 at 15,145 miles.

When this 911T rolled through Canepa’s doors, it was immediately inspected from front to back and it was deemed to be the perfect candidate for a preservation restoration. A preservation restoration is a sympathetic restoration to only the aspects that need attention, with the focus on retaining as much of the car’s originality as possible. With such an amazing, original and low mileage car, a complete restoration was unnecessary. With Canepa’s past experience with highly original cars, the Targa only needed to be freshened in order to return to the road. However, with this being Canepa, the preservation process is unlike any other and brings it to another level.

The preservation process beings with a complete disassembly of all of a car’s components. All systems were removed to be serviced or refinished to original condition, ensuring nothing was left to question. The original engine and transmission were first removed from the chassis so that they could both be carefully cleaned by hand. The engine was taken down to the long block to ensure that every component was checked, cleaned and, if required, refinished. All the fuel lines and hoses were removed and replaced, while the distributer was complete rebuilt. While the engine was out, the flywheel was surfaced and a new clutch assembly was installed. The factory exhaust system was removed and refinished beautifully, and new firewall material was added to the engine bay. With the engine and transmission now serviced, new engine and transmission mounts were fitted to complete the engine bay.

Ensuring that no stone was left unturned on this highly original Targa, suspension and brakes were the next items on the list of preservation. All of the Porsche’s suspension hardware and brake tins were removed from the car, disassembled and correctly replated. New Koni shocks were installed, while all of the suspension components were powder coated and bushings were installed all around. The brakes received an equal level of treatment, with the front and rear calipers being rebuilt and replated, new wheel bearings installed, and new brake pads on all four corners.

While the mechanical work was being completed the entire chassis was hand cleaned, taking extraordinary care to preserve all of the original finishes. New seals were installed for the doors and hood. While the windows were out, the Emerald Green paint was lightly polished to bring the special paint color to a show-quality luster.

The original 911T interior is like new and a shining example of how amazing rare originality can survive decades of time. Being stored indoors attributes to the interior not having any UV damage or any evidence that this car was exposed to the elements.

After hours of meticulous work had been performed, the car was reassembled, tuned, given a final detail and then thoroughly road tested. With a total of 634 hours of work performed at Canepa, it was one of the finest 911T preservation restorations Canepa had ever performed. Shortly afterwards, the car was purchased and it would be enjoyed for a little over 4 years with the same owner.

The 911T would return to Canepa recently with only 312 miles added since it completed its preservation restoration. With the quality work performed in 2014, the car only needed a mild cleaning by hand and light foam-pad only polishing. With its Emerald Green paint now in glistening show condition, its mechanicals in period-correct fashion, original interior pristine and a dialed-in driving experience, this 1973 Porsche 911T Targa is ready to have a new owner enjoy its award-worthy originality.

Does anyone enjoy these overdone cars, or have they simply become static display objects?

    BaT Description:

This 1972 Porsche 911T was purchased new from Glen Porsche-Audi Group in Middleton, New York, and reportedly remained with the original owner for 35 years. The second owner purchased the car in 2007 and modified it for track use, keeping the car for 11 years until his passing. Power is from a 2.4-liter 911S flat-six with PMO carburetors paired with a 915 5-speed manual transaxle. Other modifications include suspension and brake upgrades, a short-shifter, Recaro seats, a harness bar, 5-point seat belts, and a fiberglass front bumper with brake cooling. A collection of spare parts includes the original engine, factory seats, two bumpers, an extra set of Fuchs wheels, and more. This 911T is now offered on behalf of the late owner’s wife with records dating to 2002, a service manual, a factory tool kit, and a clean Texas title. The body wears an older repaint in red, though the body tag suggests the original color was Sepia Brown. The seller notes blistering on the rear fender flares due to tire rub, as well as rust inside the driver’s door.

Suspension modifications installed in 2008 include newer Boge front struts, Bilstein rear shocks, torsion bars measuring 22mm up front and 28mm out back, and Neatrix spring plate bushings. Front brakes from a 911SC were installed along with an S-style front spoiler with brake cooling ducts. 15” steel wheels are mounted with Bridgestone Potenza tires up front and Kuhmo Ecstas out back.

The cabin features Recaro SRD seats, a Brey-Krause harness bar, and Teamtech 5-point harnesses. A 3-spoke Momo Prototipo steering wheel has been added in front of the black and tan dash. Factory VDO instrumentation includes a 5-digit odometer showing approximately 76k miles, 11k of which were added by the owner in 11 years of ownership. During that time the car was reportedly used primarily at track events which were driven to and from.

A 2.4L flat-six (*6320852*) sourced from a 1972 911S was installed by Mayo Performance in 2008 and fitted with PMO carburetors in place of the factory fuel injection. A front oil cooler was added with a thermostat at the filter console and hard lines from Elephant Racing. An oil change was completed in 2016, and records show maintenance back to 2008. Shifting is through a 915 5-speed manual transaxle, and an aluminum shifter housing with a factory short-shifter was added. The removed 2.4-liter flat-six is included with the sale, along with its MFI injection system as shown in the gallery below. Also shown is stamping *6123710*, which matches the number recorded in the original service book. The engine was reportedly in running order when removed and underwent a top-end rebuild in 2002.

Spare parts are shown in gallery photos and include a set of 15×6” and 7” Fuchs alloys, tan factory seats, a steel 911T bumper, a steel 911S bumper, the factory steering wheel, and other removed parts. A factory tool kit, owner’s manual, and original service booklet are also included.

    Auction Description:

    * Porsche Certificate of Authenticity on file
    * Matching engine
    * Original European home market delivery

This striking 'Tangerine' Porsche and was selected by its owner as a car that fitted his high standards of originality and authenticity but provided a usable, driver quality example. Its Certificate of Authenticity states that the car was delivered with the engine it retains and quotes supply in this color, as well as confirming that the black leatherette and corduroy seats are original. Other options included Comfort Equipment, Light Metal Wheels and Michelin tires. Not mentioned but seemingly also fitted as new was the rear wiper option. Completed in July 1970, the 'T' Targa is supported with important and interesting documents which trace original ownership in Germany as per its Fahrzeugbrief where it was delivered new to a Dietbald Krautle of Welfshalde on September 6, 1970, who kept the car for one whole year, selling it then to Klaus Rampercer on September 6, 1971.

At some point it migrated to North America, we believe in the 1980s, a journey which is recorded by a handful of Polaroids showing the car being containerized. It is understood to have come to the US through Canada and was acquired by the current owner in 2012 on the West Coast.

As viewed today, the Porsche has an unmistakable honesty to it, of particular note is the interior which is a combination that in preference to leather provides warmth and comfort in all seasons, versus the 'over hot' or 'over cold' of hide. Those interior seats show some age, but not excessive wear and the dash in particularly good condition. In addition to the noted papers a period handbook and wallet are also on file. Offering Porsche motoring and touring at an entry level, this is an appealing and reassuringly un-messed with example.
