    BaT Description:

    This 1971 Porsche 911T Targa was acquired by the seller one year ago, and the previous owner is said to have kept the car for 43 years. Power comes from a numbers-matching 2.2-liter flat-six paired with a five-speed manual gearbox, and the factory-delivered Pastel Blue paintwork was changed to Mexico Blue under previous ownership. Service in January 2020 reportedly included replacement of the oil lines and the upper valve covers as well as an oil change. This 911T Targa is now offered with some records, a stamped service booklet, an owner’s manual, factory tools, and a clean Washington title in the seller’s name.

    The car was delivered new in Pastel Blue (2010-L) and is said to have been refinished in Mexico Blue under previous ownership. Features include Bosch H1 halogen headlights, a removable targa top, a silver targa hoop, and all-red taillights. The paintwork and exterior trim are shown in detail in the photo gallery. Silver-on-black 14″ Fuchs wheels are mounted with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires that show 2019 date codes. Disc brakes are equipped at each corner.

    The cabin is trimmed in black with folding rear seats, and a Blaupunkt CD player has been fitted in the dashboard. A four-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of factory VDO instrumentation that includes a six-digit odometer showing less than 8k miles, approximately 1k of which have been added by the seller. True mileage is unknown.

    The 2.2-liter flat-six is equipped with dual Zenith carburetors and was factory rated for 125 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 130 lb-ft of torque at 4,200 rpm. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle. The seller states that an oil change and valve adjustment were recently performed and the upper valve covers as well as the oil lines were replaced in January 2020. The engine case stamping reads ☆6116008☆ and matches the number provided via recent correspondence with Porsche Germany, which is view-able in the gallery.

    The accompanying maintenance booklet indicates that the car was delivered new to a customer in Yakima, Washington in June 1971. Included service records and tools are also shown.

    +1 I've been looking for a long hood for several years and the asking prices I've seen for some rusted and beat up 911's are unbelievable. I'm glad the market is slowing down.

    Vehicle History
    - Purchased new from Ralph Cutright Porsche-Audi, 1932 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica on September 14, 1971 by Robert Wayne Poole of Calabasas, CA.
    - The second owner, (Brother of current owner) purchased the vehicle from Mr. Poole in May 1974.
    - The third and current owner, acquired the vehicle from his brother sometime in the 1977-1978 time-frame. During his ownership, the vehicle has been maintained in original condition, regularly serviced and routinely stored in the garage. As a reflection of pride ownership, the vehicle was judged at 2000 National Porsche Club of America Porsche Parade among other annual Porsche Parade events before being parked long-term in the garage in the early 2000’s.

    Vehicle Appearance
    This vehicle has been non-operational for some time. The vehicle is a ‘time capsule’ of an original condition 1971 Porsche 911T. Being garage parked in place for the last 15 plus years with no previous long-term storage preparations, the vehicle reflects that in its appearance.
    Although garaged, the vehicle has not been covered with a car cover, so the top surfaces of the car are covered in 15 plus years of San Gabriel Valley dust, soot and dirt. The exterior paint appears to be in remarkable excellent condition, showing no fading or oxidation normally displayed on a vehicle of this age.
    The Michelin 195/70 x 14 MXV tires are flat with dryness cracks where the flat tires are compressed against the concrete garage floor. Ample tread remains on the tires, indicating the vehicle tires were in excellent condition upon being long-term parked. Fuchs in excellent condition, with minimal fading or wear of the black paint and no apparent road rash on the rims.
    Exterior rubber molding around the rear quarter windows and the rear window glass appearance dry with serious cracking caused by dryness aging. Various levels of pitting and oxidation appears on exterior chrome surfaces. The windshield and other glass surfaces appear in excellent condition. In particular, the windshield does not show pitting expected on original glass of this age.
    Front Trunk – Carpets in excellent condition except where they were in-touch with battery surfaces (very common occurrence). Metal surfaces under the trunk carpet are in excellent condition. No indication of body damage, modifications, repair work, corrosion, etc. Spare tire wheel is a 5.5Jx14 Fuchs (Date Stamp: 7/70) with an older Uniroyal Rally T3 185HRx14 tire mounted on it. The ‘Smuggler’s Box’ is occupied with dealer installed Air-Conditioning equipment (normal) which extends in height into the luggage compartment area. The black A/C equipment cover in excellent condition, not showing any wear and tear that would reflect a heavily used trunk. Front hood struts worn out and not functioning. The underside of the trunk lid is in excellent preserved shape. Factory supplied jack and tool kit present, in excellent condition showing minimal wear. No fuel leaks are visible.
    Interior – Carpets in excellent original condition. Thresholds in good original shape with portions of the rubber weather stripping molding showing only minor wear and slight aging. Front driver and passenger seats in excellent condition. Like new, very minimal signs of wear; no tearing or separating seams. Rear seats look ‘untouched’. Instrument panel coverings, padding and speaker grill in excellent condition. No signs of deformation or cracks. Slight delamination of vinyl trim covering surrounding radio. Steering wheel in very well-preserved state, slight discoloration wear on leather rim. Clutch, brake, and accelerator petals show no adverse or abusive wear, appear to be sound original condition. Coco mat rubber pad at petals appear worn and disintegrating due to age. The actual Coco fiber mats appear in excellent condition. Headliner appears original with normal aging, discoloring. There is water staining around rear quarter windows and a small tear at the passenger side coat hook. Other than that, the headliner is in sound shape with no collapsing or separation from the roof. Door panels in very good original shape with slight sagging of pop-out door pockets. Door hinges appear original and unmolested.
    Engine Compartment – Engine appears in original unmolested condition. The original air cleaner snorkel and housing is in place on the original Zenith triple throat carburetors. All hoses in place, ignition component cover in place, and hood latch plate labels in correct locations. Like the front trunk, no indications of body damage, modifications, repair work or corrosion. As expected, the rear deck lid hood strut is non-functional.
    Chassis – Since unable to lift the car up to remove wheels and inspect underside, only limited observations are noted; no indications of body damage, modifications, repair work or corrosion. The underside of the engine and transmission shows weeping of most gaskets which indicates that engine/trans will need to be pulled and resealed along with other preventive maintenance after a very long dormant state.

    BaT Description:

    This 1969 Porsche 911T is a disassembled project which includes a five-speed manual transaxle and a numbers-matching 2.0L flat-six. The car was originally Silver Metallic over black leatherette and was stripped and disassembled following the selling dealer’s 2015 acquisition. The flat-six was rebuilt by Auto Support of Stow, Massachusetts in 2015 at a cost of nearly $13k, and many underhood components were refinished at that time. This 911T is now offered by the selling dealer with removed factory components, a set of rotisserie stands, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, an invoice for the engine rebuild, and a clean Massachusetts title.

    The car was originally finished in Silver Metallic with black Porsche script on the doors. The bodyshell was stripped several years ago, save for the doors, and the seller reports that the driver-side lower rocker panel was replaced with new metal.

    A set of Fuchs wheels are included in place of the original chrome 15″ wheels. The removed bumpers and other factory trim are pictured below. Sekurit markings are shown on the front, rear, and side glass, and the rear quarter windows have been removed from the car.

    The interior and front trunk have been stripped, exposing the floors, interior panels, and dash. Photos of the cabin prior to disassembly are provided and show the black leatherette interior, as well as the floors from both above and below with the car on a rotisserie.

    The carbureted 2.0L flat-six is paired with a five-speed manual transaxle. The engine was overhauled by Auto Support of Stow, Massachusetts in 2015 at a cost of $12,674, and also received refinished cam covers and other components at that time. Engine number *6196919* is shown in the gallery and corresponds to the included Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. Provided photos detail the removed components, including the steering rack, suspension arms, wiring, gauges, interior trim, carpets, and more. Included parts will be boxed and labeled prior to delivery to the new owner. The riveted body tags have been removed, and stampings on the bodyshell are pictured in the gallery.

    An included Porsche Certificate of Authenticity shows the original color combination of Silver Metallic over black leatherette, and lists the engine number, transmission number, and optional equipment. A walk-through video is viewable, and details the included components and the work already undertaken by the selling dealer.

    The last long hood 911Ts delivered to the U.S. in ’72 and half of ’73 were the only ones to receive the coveted mechanical fuel injection system. Europe referred to these as T/E’s. The rest of the world still got carburetors. However, only 781 of these MFI T Targas were delivered in this last year production of the long-hood/F-series Porsches. The sound and throttle response of the MFI system is unique to these early cars and once tuned, they perform consistently for many years.

    This Porsche 911 was built in September of 1972 and sold new in the U.S. It appears to have been ordered with the following options:

    - Velour carpeting
    - Alloy wheels (Fuchs)
    - Sway bars (front and rear)
    - Aluminum door sills
    - 911S rubber moldings on bumpers and below doors

    - Leather covered steering wheel
    - Aluminum rocker panels

    Although not much is known about this 911’s early history, it had the same owner for over 30-years before the current owner purchased it on August 18th, 2018. Rick DeMan of DeMan Racing in Nyack, New York serviced the car for at least 15-years for the previous owner. He always contended that it was an excellent driver and very well sorted. I spoke to DeMan and he said that prior to these owners taking the car to him, they had had the car repainted and the engine rebuilt. We estimate the paint job was at least 20-years ago. He said they didn’t use it much. They stored it most of the time and only drove it a few hundred miles a year. However, regardless of miles, they brought it to DeMan at least once a year for routine services. DeMan purchased the car from them a few years ago and did a light cosmetic refreshing of the engine bay. He pulled the drivetrain, replaced seals, powdercoated tins, installed a new sound pad, and then sold it to the current owner. The engine was noted as being most likely a replacement blank case that was installed and restamped at the dealer when the car was near new. Possibly, it was a warranty replacement. DeMan said the engine was rebuilt before he started servicing the car. He performed routine compression tests over the years and it was always even and strong.

    Shortly after purchasing this 911, the current owner relocated to Southern California and brought the car with him. For the last 18-months, this owner has added almost 5,000 miles. He used it for weekend cruising and attending local car shows as well as a trip to Monterey for car week. Shortly after purchasing the car, this owner had a tune up performed as well as a leak down test. The results were excellent (percent off of 100):

    Highlights of services performed since the current owner purchased this 911 include:

    - Sport seats with houndstooth inserts (reproduction)
    - Porsche Classic radio
    - Repair clock
    - Clean fuse box area and make sure all lights work
    - Last oil service (7/19 @ 18,250 miles)
    - Replace driver door stop and repair passenger door stop
    - Replace oil level sensor
    - Major service including spark plugs

    This 911 is in very good condition and presents quite well. Although the paint job was many years ago and it was not disassembled and stripped down, it has held up extremely well and shows hardly any signs of wear. Behind some of the seals and in cervices, you can see the original light yellow paint. The fact that all the metal is original and the car has never been apart is certainly a testament to how it was cared for and stored all these years. There are a couple small blemishes on the cowl (see photos). The glass is in good condition with no significant flaws and appears to be all original. Also most, if not all of the deco and trim are original and also in great condition. The stainless targa bar has no major scratches. The targa top has some slight wrinkling on the leading edge, but fits nicely. The Fuchs wheels are wearing their original factory anodized finish and are in good shape with slight signs of fading paint. They are wearing Michelin tires date stamped 2012. They have at least 75% tread remaining with no cracks or signs of dry rot. The front brakes have at least 50% life left and the rears are at about 75%.

    The interior is equally as nice and looks fresh. The seats are new and show hardly any signs of use. The carpet is also new and looks/feels factory new. The targa headliner is in good shape with no sagging. The original door panels are in excellent shape with minimal warping of the factory pockets. The dash was replaced decades ago with a factory replacement unit. There are no cracks or warping. The steering wheel is original and unrestored. It has some light cracking on the top (see photo). All the gauges work properly including the clock. The sun visors are new and look nice. The passenger one sometimes falls down. The Porsche Classic radio works great and has both navigation and Bluetooth capability. The new driver door stay is stiff and pops when closing.

    This MFI 911 starts easily on the first or second try and holds an even idle. Power delivery is strong and it builds revs quickly with no popping or other issues. The 915 gearbox shifts smoothly with no grinding or slipping. It feels fresh. The brakes have a nice initial bite and have excellent pedal feel with no pulling. The steering is precise and light. The car tracks straight and nicely absorbs the road imperfections. The car is equipped with Bilstein shocks/struts. Also, the car has stainless steel heat exchangers. There is a slight oil weeping that occasionally drips on the heat exchanger and makes a light oil smell. This longhood 911 would be ideal on vintage touring events while also presenting well at your local show.

    California registration is current and paid to February of 2021.

    This 911 comes with the spare wheel/tire, jack, personalized CA legacy plate (for CA buyers), targa top cover, touch up paint, and recent service records.

The Early 911S Registry has the ability to remove objectionable messages and we will make every effort to do so, within a reasonable time frame, if we determine that removal is necessary.
