    How to remove bumper guards

Can someone pls. help with the procedure to remove the front and rear S bumper guards off a 1970. A step by step would be a great help. Is there any thing unique for removing guards with Amco bars? Can you take the guards off without removing the Amco bars to preserve the position of the bars? What are the chances of breaking the hardware? Its a 37 yr old car imagine penetrate oil would be a good idea before removing hardware. Is new hardware available for mounting again? Best source for that/part numbers?

    thanks

I'd right it all down but I'd be here all night. It's all common sense. However, a shop manual would go a long way.

They are mounted through the front trunk bulkhead. A couple of opaque plastic body plugs hid the bolts which are hex head if my memory serves me.

    Here's a photo worth a 1000 words.

    Best of luck,

    Rear bumper guards removal

Pretty easy as well. Remove the two plastic plugs on the top of the bumper guard (open the decklid for easy access), unscrew the allen screws. On the bottom there is just one allen screw to remove. Then pull it away.

    Good luck, Cees

    bumper

be prepaired for the bolts to brake, or the bolt head to round off and getting oil to the necessary place is almost impossible.I would suggest that unless you have a real good reason to take it apart that you don't. I looked at a 1969 to 1973 bumper that I have and the bolts were the star allen type, approx 12 points? They are fairly easy to round off.

I'd contact Paul at Stoddard. He's been at it a long time and is always helpful in these matters.

I looked in the front of the trunk and you can clearly see the 2 opaque covers on the passenger side that cover the access to the bolts but on the driver side I can only see the top one. right below that one is a black gromet that has a wire going thru it. I dont think the other opaque cover is behind the washer resrv. as that would not line up like passenger side. could there be just one bolt on the driverside for attachment. can someone else check their trunk. thanks

My plan would be to take the whole front bumper off and then work to remove the chrome guards. It's easier to get to the hardware when you're not inverted. That way you don't have to worry about working behind the windshield washer reservoir. And the bumper is already off to clean up the inevitable dirt/rust.
