I don't want to pee in the punch bowl here but .... I heard a year or 2 ago from a few 'in the know' (me, certainly not being one in the know!) that there was some controversy regarding whether this was the 'real' McQueen/LeMans car. The Excellence article certainly outlines some convincing documentation. Is there any remaining question that this is, in fact, the real McQueen car?

There was a bit of controversy as at one time, McQueen's son (I think his name is Todd) who owns a similar car that was also once owned by his father, claimed that his was the one that was used in the movie "Le Mans". However, after further research, the son now acknowwledges that Jesse owns the Le Mans car. So that controversy has been put to rest and all agree that Jesse has the car that was in the movie.

    Yeah, John's right...

For a long time the '69S, that Chad McQueen now owns, was thought (by only the people who weren't looking closely at the movie) to be the LeMans car. That, and the fact that the 'real '70S went 'underground' almost immediately after the film... not to be seen again... until a couple of years ago.

Jesse has all the docs for the '70 from the factory to Solar/McQueen to the judge who bought it very soon after it came to the States.... IT'S THE REAL DEAL...

BTW- The '69S is a pretty interesting car in it's self (ya'think).
It csold new through Von Neumann's Competition Motors dealership that was run by Richie Ginther. Klaus Holthouse (of NARW) was working for Richie at the time, and Klaus told me he fitted a 'short' gear box and a rally skid plate to it so, as McQueen put it, "I could play with it on Mulholland". I far as I know, the short gearbox is still in the car, but the skid plate has long since left the scene…

Man, I can't wait to see Jesse's '70S … And hopefully he'll debut it to the local community soon…

    Cheers,

I've read the story too in the Excellence mag. Very interesting

Why do you think Steve McQueen decided to sell the 70S, not the 69S?

Ya'know, I think no one will ever know for sure......

    Holiday Cheers,

I can attest to that...nothing quite like a clean shift at 7300+ rpm...ESPECIALLY with headers and straight pipes yahoo...

Well guys, according to this interview with our friend and member Jesse Rodrigues, the reasons for McQueen to keep the 2,0 were much more mundane. It seems like he kept the car because he "had gone to some expense installing a state-of-the-art stereo system"...

I asked Chad;he said Steve didn't like the gearbox.

My own believes are that the movie LEMANS wasn't a big sucess,Steve used his own money to finance it;I THINK it was for financial reasons.
    STEREO,GEARBOX,FINANCIAL??? Who knows for sure?
Just glad I got the '70 S from the movie!
