    Thumbs up ST Tribute

I was at the annual 356 event here in Melbourne today where there was a fantastic newly built ST tribute car. There has been an amazing attention to detail with this car which has been built to be used as a working competition car - not a display item or Garage queen.

The sound from the 2.3 twin plug motor is fantastic and could be heard several blocks away, and I am sure the noise inside the car from the straight cut gearbox will add to the music.

It has lots of lightweight bits, and parts like the gearbox and 10 inch minilights that are from the period and probably used in anger here in Australia in the period.

The "non correct" pieces - like the fantastic pedal box are there for improved function as a working race car - not because the "correct" parts could not be sources.

i am told at a shakedown race last weekend, one of the famous local drivers from the time came over to talk about the car and said it even sounded authentic as it screamed down the main straight

All in all a great piece of workmanship and a credit to the owner and to the builder.

Beautiful! Love those cool little details like the tartan seat inserts and TB tires with a just right sidewall section!

    Hugh:

Thanks for posting these pix of the ST recreation. It's always inspirational to see a well done car, restored with the same parts and fashion (mostly as you point out) as the original car....and the same parts that would be used for a restoration of that original car.

I think doing it this way makes these "Tribute" cars quite different and more significant than a Shelby Cobra clone, which is done with completely modern parts that "look like" the original.

Do you know which brand the tires are? Are they Michelin TB15s? I noticed that the Kremer ST restoration used Hoosier bias ply street tread racing tires.

I'm not sure of the 2.3 specs, but the reason for 2.3 as opposed to 2.5 is that for our Historic Group N category, the cars must have raced in Australia in the period or be "exact" recreations of cars that did.

& yes, this car sounds fantasic when being driven "in anger"!

    hugh

can he run the 10" rears in competition - or are they only for show? i thought all the group N guys ran 7" wheels all round.

the reason behind the 2.3 capacity is the rules in the day allowed an overbore (1mm from memory) which takes the stock 2.2 out to 2.3.

I dont know what the exact specs are. I will try to find out but I was told that it should give about 100BHP per litre when properly sorted and tuned and that will translate to about 220HP.

However I know the person who did all the bodywork and put it all together lurks on this board from time to time.

Maybe he can "out himself" and post some more details with much more accuracy than I can

I dont think he can run the 10's in competition. I am not sure what he can run. But as you know the rules are very strict. for example he has to have glass windows that add a lot to the weight. Despite that he was raving about the stopping power on the "S" brakes they have to run due to the light weight

What's the story of the fiberglass panel in the drivers side floor board?
