Within the last 5 years, gentleman racing in vintage cars has really taken off. The chance to relive some past memories in a safe and fun environment is just too tempting. Unfortunately, with the value of many of these racecars’ street siblings rising and fewer remaining vintage racers, the cost to get started in vintage racing can be extremely high.
This is a unique opportunity to purchase a somewhat historical vintage Porsche 356 racecar at an affordable price. The cost to build something similar would easily be double! Or, this is a great starting point to build your own “356 Outlaw” creation.
This Porsche has been a racecar for over 40 years! We have most of its logbooks, or copies of them dating back to at least 1966. There were rumors in the past that this was an ex-Brumos racecar, but we have no documentation to prove it and it has never been confirmed. This car is accepted in HMSA, SCCA, VARA, HSR, and most any other international vintage racing organizations. In fact, it did run at the prestigious Monterey Historics at one time!
The bodywork is reminiscent of the Abarth Porsches of the era. It is all steel and well executed. The rear fender wells are nicely beaded and the extended nose hides the oil cooler. The two round vents on the nose also come with two neat rubber bumperettes if the venue requires front bumpers.
The car is not rusty but has had numerous metal repairs and patches, not particularly pretty if compared to a streetcar, but all done reasonably well for a racecar. It was represented to me that the floors were replaced because a roll cage needed to be removed, and the longitudinals were replaced in order to substitute a stiffening rib for the heater tube…all attesting to it’s full life as true race car.
It still has some of the original interior including headliner, door panels, carpet and all its glass. It has a big gas tank, Carrera front drum brakes, and the rear brakes are “B” drums with Carrera style vented backing plates. The wheels are 15” Lemmerz drum types that have been widened. It also has a front adjustable anti-sway bar. The engine in the car is a 60-61 super case and was represented to me as being freshly rebuilt 3 years ago with 11:1 compression ratio, but never run and only needing first start-up rituals and tuning. Many spares are included and here is the list.
