    On any Sunday...in New Mexico

Thought I would share a few photos from a trip I took last Sunday down to
Corrales, NM. Corrales is just outside of Albuquerque, about 210 miles south of my home in Durango, CO.

The reason for this day trip was to attend the Corrales Round-up and drop off Greg's 72T at a shop nearby for some work his car needed. Greg (72T), Ray (997 GTRS) and myself (70E) made the trip down quickly, my little 2.2 doing it's best to keep up with a 3.6 equipped 72T and Rays GT3RS.

The Corrales Round-up is a great little event held at Dave & Ann Stinchcomb's house where all types of Porsche's gather for the day under the cottonwood treees. This year was the 39th year Dave and Ann have hosted this event!

When we arrived in Corrales, we drove first to Russ Kelso's shop

    http://www.pmciinc.com/index.html

Russ lives just down the road from the Round-up. As we approached Russ's shop my car started missing and chugging. After a brief visit with Russ, who was preparing his cars for the Round-up, my car was very hard to start.
Russ mentioned that it may be vapor locking, and that it would be fine after cooling for ahwile. I limped it over to the Round-up, keeping the revs up as it wanted to die at idle. Parked the cars, and hung-out for about 3 hours.

When it came time to leave for our trip back home, my car started fine & seem to run like normal. 5 miles down the road the missing/chugging symptoms re-occured. Hmmm, this is not good. The condition worsened as I navigated the busy Hwy 528 / 550 intersection. Heading north another mile or so, it became evident my car would not make the 210 mile trip back to Durango! I had to get the revs up to 5000 just to get any power, the engine loosing power as I shifted. I quickly made a u-turn on the highway and shut it down.

Fortunately we were only about 7 miles from Russ Kelso's shop. Driving the short distance was an impossibility. Called AAA and a flat-bed arrived in no time...what a shocker!
Ray proceeded to capture this event for the archives, and we all had a pretty good laugh about it.

Notice the moniker on the back of the tow-truck...ASAP, as in get your wallet out ASAP !

Despite the breakdown everything seemed to be going pretty well. Tow truck arrived quickly, loaded the car with out incident. Could have been much worse if we had run another 100 miles up the road in BFE and had this issue.

Now we had only one minor problem left to deal with.

    3 guys and one GT3RS

Surely we can figure out a way to all fit in the car. Well after squeezing into the small space below the roll bar in the back seat, I realized 2 things.
If I actually get myself in this space they will need the jaws of life to pry me out and secondly "there is no F-in way !"

As the Porsche gods continued to shine down on us in laughter another stroke of good luck occured....a 944 Turbo! Our compadre who joined us on the trip to retrieve his 944 Turbo from Russ's shop approached. Now this was a stroke of luck as our compadre does not own a cell phone, so we had no way to reach him. After the tow-truck left I rode in the water-pumper and Greg and Ray departed in the GT3RS

After a early dinner stop at El Bruno's in Cuba, NM
    http://www.elbrunos.com/

Ray asked me if I'd like to drive the GT3RS the rest of the way home. Uhhh sure, why not?!

The next 100 miles consist of Autobahn like highway, long sweepers, decents, and scenic climbs. Of course we maintained the legal limit of speed.
Can you do that in 6th gear at 7000 rpms ?

I have had the pleasure of knowing Dave and Ann since 1976, at the old Fiesta Del Porsche in Santa Fe, N.M. We use to drive down from Aspen and Vail, going through Buena Vista, down to Alamosa, and then on down to Santa Fe. Your are right about the roads, really great for high speed cruising. Great pictures of the event.
