Thread: Details Details! Which Speaker Grille Is Correct For A 1969-1973?

  1. #21
Well of course they won't be able to Mike, they didn't exist then so your spot on.

Flip the speaker grille over if it has 4 threaded studs which push into plastic receievers in the dash then its 70 onwards...end of story.

If its got 4 metal spring clips instead its a one year only 69 speaker grille

I think there's two conversations going on here.....

    - What dashes were available through the years, what did they look like, and when did they change.
    - And, what was available as a factory replacement for the 2.4's.

I'm only a 20 year relative new comer to this deal but....
When restoring my '73 car in early '90 through mid '90 we removed the original dash for paint and decided it was 'crispy' enough to replace. The available factory options at the time were what I have mentioned before:
    - A perforated dash with no separate speaker grill.
    - And a plan dash without perforations.
There was however a very expensive (at the time) factory dash with separate speaker gill (included) available about 3/4's through my restoration in '90.

This is what I remember......... it was almost 20 years ago so give me some slack.

The factory had dashes available from whenever the separate grill dash started through about 1985. After about '85 they were no longer available and were superceded with the two dashes mentioned. Around late 1990 the factory dashes with the separate grills started being limitedly available again for more then twice the price as the other two.

I remember hearing, and I'm am assuming, there was no trouble getting a new dash replacement with speaker grill from the factory through about 1985......

BTW - In the '73 parts book :
    Dash - 911.552.032.00
    Dash R/H - 911.552.031.00
    Speaker grill cover - 911.522.048.00

    Hope any of this helps...

    Cheers,

I have a mid year 1970S that has the square hole pattern with steel clips holding the cover on. It has been in the family since 1972 and I know it hasn't been changed since then and I highly doubt there would have been a reason to change it before that so I believe it to be original.

OK, I just looked: my 72S has the incorrect speaker grill. Now what???? Some PO must've replaced it when the dash was replaced (I'm guessing that the dash was replaced.) So now, what I thought was a perfect car...is not. Alas, my RS DOES have the correct speaker grill. Thank God for small favors....

    Chuck ?

Not to be a SA, seriously, if the factory sold that dash, how did they think you'd hear the radio ?? I don't "get-it" ??

    Jule,

Very interesting I had thought that 69 dash was 1 year only, love to know the dimesions of the speaker grille to see if the attaching mechanism carried on for a while or if the whole dash went into the 70 year and beyond.

I could never understand the factory replacement without speaker holes either. Perhaps the Germans liked muffled music!!!!!

    Stacey,

Just buy one off E Bay and replace it or take the one off your RS ha ha.

It will fit the same if your 72 has the octagonal pattern speaker grille

a 69' dash will not fit onto a 70' model year car without oblonging some holes behind the dash for the studs to fit through. Plane and simple..
    Clyde, is correct for once.

    I just measured the grilles

69 is approx 240mm long and 115mm wide

73 is approx 255mm long and 115mm wide

    74 is same as 73
